WHAT DOES THE PHRASE "ALL HIS SINS WILL BE FORGIVEN" MEAN OR RELATE TO?

This document enlists the ahadeeth wherein the prophet (s.a.w) have informed us about certain deeds, methods and actions which might help us forgive our sins. However, to have a better idea on "what kind of sins are fogiven (i.e major or minor), I'll quote the following passage showing the view of different scholars , taken from the book “Qualities that expiate sins” by Imam Shafi’i , Tahkeeq al Muhaqqiq Hisamuddin Ibn Moosa. There are mainly two views on this :

The First opinon is of those scholars who believe that these hadeeth are applicable to minor sins only

Majority of the scholars are of the view that good deeds expiate minor sins, and as for the major sins , they are not expiated just by good deeds , but rather one must repent.  [Nayl Al-Awtar 3/57]

Qadhi `Iyadh said : The sins (which are forgiven)  that this hadith mentions are not the major ones , and this is the madhab of the ahlus sunnah , and that the major sins are expiated by repentance and by the mercy and grace of ALLAH ( s.w.t). [Sharh Al-Nawawi on Sahih Muslim 1/446  and see Neil Al-Awtar 3/57]

And Imam Ibn Al-Arabi said: the sins that are mentioned here which are forgiven are minor not major, as the prophet (s.a.w) said : (Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed.) ….. [A’aradh Al-Ahwazi 1/13.]

The second opinion is of those who believe that this hadeeth is applicable on both major as well as minor

A group among the scholars hold the view that good deeds expiate all the sins whether major or minor sins and this is the view of Ibn mundir and Ibn hazm and a group of scholars from the Mutaqadimeen and so is the view of Allamah Albani and Shaikh Ahmed Al-Bana from the Mutaakhireen.

Mubarakfoori said: Allah (s.w.t) says: (that good deeds expiate bad deeds) this clearly holds the view that good deeds expiate all bad deeds whether major or minor)

Conclusion :

Scholars differ over this subject, hence Allah alone knows what kind of sins he might forgive and thus the best solution is to supplicate that Oh Allah forgive our major and minor sins for your mercy overtakes your wrath.

WHY SHOULD WE REPENT OR SEEK FORGIVENESS?

The most appropriate and reasonable answer to such a question will have to consist a detailed explanation both from logical as well as a religious perspective. One of the major reasons why a person should repent is fearing the torment and wrath of Allah. We shiver and get goosebumps when we receive a threat from some mafia gang or from some goons and etc, but surprisingly we ignorantly overlook the punishment of someone who is the Most powerful and Most mighty, there is no strength and might except with Allah. However we don't have sufficient room for such a detailed answer in this blog post,  therefore i will resort to quoting a few verses/hadeeth which; after reading shall suffice the questioner

the prophet sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam said : Minor sins are like a group of people who came to an open space of land. When it was time for preparing their food, everyone from the group went to gather firewood. One of them would bring one stick and another would bring two sticks until they (all) gathered a great quantity of fire-wood. Then they kindled the fire and cooked their food. Similarly a man may gather minor sins until they destroy him unless Allah forgives them. Avoid minor sins for Allah will certainly punish you for them

[Ref: tadhkira ahwaal fi mawta wal-Aakhira lil Qurtubi 1/626 shamela]

“And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you (from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah)” [Hood 11:52]

Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says: {Except those who repent and believe (in Islaamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds; for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And whosoever repents and does righteous good deeds; then verily, he repents towards Allaahwith true repentance.} [Surah al-Furqaan (25): 70-71 ; taken from ilm4all blog]

`Ataa reported from Mu`aadh bin Jabl that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “(O people!) Keep your duty to Allaah and fear him as much as you can. And remember Allaah عز وجل near every stone and tree (i.e. remember Allaah much). And if you committed a sin, follow it up with repentance – a secret (mistake to be repented) secretly; and an open (mistake to be repented) publicly.”

[Ref: Imaam Ahmad in “al-Zuhd” (26) and Tabaraanee in “al-Mu`jam al-Kabeer” (20/159/331). Shaikh al-Albaanee said in al-Saheehah (3320): “the narrators of this narration are reliable, they are the narrators of al-Bukhaaree and Muslim; except for Shareek (one of the narrators) who is weak, and the chain is Mursal (broken) as `Ataa did not meet Mu`aadh.” This Hadeeth also has supporting chain which takes it to the level of “Hasan li ghairihee”, see al-Silsilah (1475) ]

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever continuously seeks Allah’s forgiveness, then Allah will make a way out for him from every hardship, from every anxiety, and will provide him with sustenance from where he does not expect.”

[Ref: Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Prayer, Number 1518, Hasan fil Matan]

Not only is it extremely easy to repent , but it is rewarding as well. For e.g, It is as easy as :

He (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam ) said " To feel remorse (i.e bad or guilty for one's evil act) is (a form of) repentance

[Ref: Collected by Ibn Mājah in his Sunan (no. 4234) and Aḥmad in his Musnad (no. 3597) on the authority of ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas’ūd. It has been authenticated by al-Albānī  in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah (3/4328)]

However, this doesn't mean a person restricts his repentance to merely feeling bad about what he did. Let us not kid ourselves.

ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO REPENT AND THE VIRTUES OF THOSE WHO SEEK FORGIVENESS

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: I am as My servant expects Me and I am with him as he remembers Me. By Allah, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than how one of you would be on finding the lost camel in the waterless desert. When he draws near Me by the span of his hand, I draw near him by the length of a cubit. And when he draws near Me by the length of a cubit, I draw near him by the length of a fathom. And when he draws near Me walking, I draw close to him quickly.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Number 6610; al-Bukhaari, no. 6309)]

Ibn Maajah (4250) narrated that Ibn Mas‘ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.”

It is reported that a man came to ʿAlī – Allāh be pleased with him – and asked, "What do you think about a man who committed a sin?" He replied, "He must seek Allāh’s forgiveness and repent to Him." [The man] said, "He did that, but then sinned again?" [ʿAlī] said, "He must seek Allāh’s forgiveness and repent to Him." The man again said, "He did that, but returned to sin". [ʿAlī] said, "He must seek Allāh’s forgiveness and repent to Him." The man said for the fourth time, "He did, but then sinned again." ʿAlī then said, "Until when?" Then he said, "He must seek Allāh’s forgiveness and repent to Him; and not give up until it is Shayṭān who is defeated [overcome]."

[Ref: Hunād b. Al-Sarī, Kitāb Al-Zuhd article 910]

A SMALLER THAN AN ATOM's PEEK INTO THE MERCY OF ALLAH

Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said, "Allah has one hundred mercies, out of which He has sent down only one for jinn, mankind, animals and insects, through which they love one another and have compassion for one another; and through it, wild animals care for their young. Allah has retained ninety-nine mercies to deal kindly with His slaves on the Day of Resurrection."

[Ref: Bukhaari and Muslim, Also quoted in Riyad al Saaliheen  : Book 1, Hadith 420]
It is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas:

......(cont..) " Allah burdens not a soul beyond its capacity. It gets every good that it earns and it suffers every ill that it earns. Our Lord, call us not to account if we forget or make a mistake. He the (Lord) said: I indeed did it (i.e accepted this  supplication). Our Lord! do not lay on us a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us. He (our Lord) said: I indeed did it. And pardon us, have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector" (ii. 286). He said: I indeed did it.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 229]

I heard Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) saying, "When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: 'Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath"

[Ref: Bukhaari and Muslim, Also quoted in Riyad al Saaliheen  : Book 1, Hadith 419]

“Say: ‘O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful’”

[al-Zumar 39:53]

Anas (RA) said that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: “ALLAH the Exalted said: “O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me, and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam were you to come to me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and were you then to face me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it (earth).’

[Recorded in Al-Tirmidhi, Book 45, Hadith number 3540]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (s.a.w) said,

"Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious said: 'A slave committed a sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin,' and Allah said: 'My slave committed a sin and then he realized that he has a Rubb Who forgives the sins and punishes for the sin.' He then again committed a sin and said: 'My Rubb, forgive my sin,' and Allah (SWT) said: 'My slave committed a sin and then realized that he has a Rubb Who forgives his sin and punishes for the sin.' He again committed a sin and said: 'My Rubb, forgive my sin,' and Allah (SWT) said: 'My slave has committed a sin and then realized that he has a Rubb Who forgives the sin or takes (him) to account for sin. I have granted forgiveness to my slave. Let him do whatever he likes".

[Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6953; Muslim, 4953 and Riyad al-saaliheen Book 1, Hadith 421 : The last sentence "let him do..". means, as long he keeps asking for forgiveness after the commission of sins, and repents, Allah will forgive him because repentance eliminates previous sins". (Editor's Note)]

“It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri that the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Among the people who came before you there was a man who killed ninety-nine people, then he asked about the most knowledgeable person in the land. He was told about a monk, so he went to him and said, ‘I have killed ninety-nine people, can I repent?’ The monk said, ‘No.’ So he killed him, thus making the number one hundred. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person in the land, and he was told about a scholar, so he (went to him and) said: ‘I have killed one hundred people. Can I repent?’ He said, ‘Yes, who could stop you from repenting? Go to such and such a land, where there are people who worship Allaah. Worship Allaah with them and do not go back to your own land, for it is a bad land.’ So he set out, and when he was halfway there, death came upon him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment argued over him. The angels of mercy said, ‘He was coming repentant, turning with his heart towards Allaah.’ The angels of punishment said, ‘He never did anything good.’ Then an angel came to them in human form and they accepted him as a mediator. He said, ‘Measure the distance between the two lands, and whichever he is closer to is where be belongs.’ So they measured the distance and found that he was closer to the land to which he was headed, so the angels of mercy took him.”

[Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Saheeh, in Kitaab al-Tawbah (2766)]

Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah the Exalted stretches out His Hand by night for those who repent until the coming of the day, and He stretches out His Hand by day for those who repent until the coming of the night; this is until the sun rises from the west.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Number 6644]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Allaah spreads out His Hand at night to accept the repentance of those who did wrong during the day, and He spreads out His Hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who did wrong during the night. (This will continue) until the sun rises from the west.”

[Narrated by Muslim, no. 2759]

From Ibn Abbas -Radhi Allaahu anhu- said who said that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said: that Allaah Azza wa Jal said:

من علم أني ذو قدرة على مغفرة الذنوب غفرت له و لا أبالي ما لم يشرك بي شيئا

‘Whoever knows that I have the capability to forgive sins, then I will forgive him and not care,  as long as he did not associate anything with Me.’

[Collected by Tabrani and Albaani declared it to be Hasan in Saheeh al-Jamia no. 4330]

A quick summary - 10 pointers on how to have our sins forgiven

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) stated as occurs in Majmu' al-Fatawa (7/487-501):

The texts of the Book and the Sunnah have indicated that the punishment (due) for sins can be removed from the servant by around ten causes.

The first: Repentance, and this is agreed upon amongst the Muslims.

The second cause: Seeking forgiveness.

The third cause: Good deeds which wipe out (evil deeds).

The fourth cause: That which repels punishment, the supplication of the believers for a believer, such as praying over his funeral.

The fifth cause: What is done for the dead of righteous deeds such as charity and its likes.

The sixth cause: The intercession of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) and others for the sinners on the Day of Judgement.

The seventh cause: Calamities by which Allaah expiates sins in the life of this world.

The eighth cause: What occurs in the grave of tribulation, compression and fear.

The ninth cause: The terrors of the Day of Judgement and the severity of its hardships.

The tenth: The mercy of Allaah, His pardon and forgiveness without any reason (necessitating that) from the servant. Comment

Note that three affairs come from a servant himself (repentance, seeking forgiveness, good deeds). Three affairs come from other than the servant (supplication, deeds of others which reach the dead and intercession). And three affairs are from the calamities (of life, the barzakh and the day of judgement) that expiate the sins. And after these nine matters, there is left but the pure mercy of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. In this is a refutation of the Kharijites who hold a person who dies with major sins (not having repented) is a disbeliever in the Fire forever, since expiation of sins can take place through other than repentance and seeking forgiveness, and exhausting those other means (which come from other than the servant himself), there still remains the pure mercy of Allaah, the Exalted. And this in itself indicates the great mercy of Allaah, the Sublime and Exalted in that He did not restrict and limit the causes of forgiveness to the servant himself.

25+ WAYS / SHORTCUTS TO GET ALL OUR SINS FORGIVEN

1. Doing Wudu (Ablution) Properly and praying 2 rak'at after it with sincerity

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever does wudoo’ and does it well, then prays two rak’ahs focusing on them completely [according to another report: and does not think of anything else i.e prays with sincerity asking Allah's forgiveness], will be forgiven all his previous sins [according to another report: will be guaranteed Paradise].”

[Al-Bukhaari, al-Bagha edn., no. 158; al-Nisaa'i, 1/95; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6166, Musnad Ahmad via Abu darda 26998 and see Silsilah al-Saheeha 3398]

Abu Dardaa (ra) said: I heard theMessenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) say: "Whoever performs ablution and beautifies it, then stands and prays two rakahs – or four, Sahl (a subnarrator) is not sure - beautifying them with dhikr and khushoo (proper concentration) * and then seeks forgivesness from Allaah, will be forgiven."

[Reported by Ahmad with a Hasan isnaad.]
*Jaabir (ra) said: I asked the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) about wiping the pebbles during prayer. He said: "Only once, but if you withold from doing that it is better for you than a hundred black-eyed she-camels." Reported by Ibn Khuzaimah in his [Saheeh] it is also in [Saheeh ut-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb], no. 558.]

And at the end of the hadeeth of Amr bin Asabah (ra): "... If he stands and prays, praises Allaah, glorifies Him,extolls Him with that which He is worthy of and empties his heart for Allaah the Exalted alone, he will depart from his sins in the same condition as the day his mother gave birth to him."[Reported by Muslim and see [Saheeh ut-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb], no. 392.]

The prophet (s.a.w) said :

When a bondsman  – a Muslim or a believer – washes his face (in course of ablution), every sin he contemplated with his eyes will be washed away from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water ; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water, with the result that he comes out pure from all sins.

[Sahih Muslim Book 2, Hadith 475]

The Messenger of Allâh sallAllâhu `alayhi wa sallam said:

He who performed ablution well, his sins would come out from his body, even coming out from under his nails.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 476]

2. Doing wudu properly , then proceeding towards the masjid for the prayer and sincerely waiting for the prayer to commence

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) said :

"The congregational prayer of anyone amongst you is more than twenty (five or twenty seven) times in reward than his prayer in the market or in his house, for if he performs ablution completely and then goes to the mosque with the sole intention of performing the prayer, and nothing urges him to proceed to the mosque except the prayer, then, on every step which he takes towards the mosque, he will be raised one degree or one of his sins will be forgiven. The angels will keep on asking Allah's forgiveness and blessings for everyone of you so long as he keeps sitting at his praying place (waiting for the prayer to start). The angels will say, 'O Allah, bless him! O Allah, be merciful to him!' as long as he does not do Hadath or a thing which gives trouble to the other." The Prophet (s.a.w) further said, "One is regarded in prayer so long as one is waiting for the prayer."

[Sahih Bukhaari, Vol. 3, Book 34, Hadith 330]

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: I brought water to `Uthman bin `Affan to perform the ablution while he was sitting on his seat. He performed the ablution in a perfect way and said, "I saw the Prophet (s.a.w) performing the ablution in this place and he performed it in a perfect way and said,

"Whoever performs the ablution as I have done this time and then proceeds to the mosque and offers a two-rak`at prayer and then sits there (waiting for the compulsory congregational prayers), then all his past sins will be forgiven." The Prophet (s.a.w) further added, "Do not be conceited (thinking that all your other sins will also be forgiven because of this or because of how excellently you pray but one should think that if we are forgiven it is because of Allah's mercy).

[Sahih al Bukhari  Vol. 8, Book 76, Hadith 441]

3. Praying the 5 compulsory prayers with sincerity and proper postures

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Five prayers which Allaah has made obligatory. Whoever does wudoo’ properly for them, prays them on time, does rukoo’ properly (i.e keeping his spine straight such that water when poured over does not pour down) and has perfect khushoo’ (sincerity or concentration in prayer) , it is a promise from Allaah that he will be forgiven, but whoever does not do this, has no such promise – if Allaah wishes, He will forgive him, and if He wishes, He will punish him.”

[Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 425; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3242]

The prophet (s.a.w) said :

“When a slave stands and prays, all his sins are brought and placed on his head and shoulders. Every time he bows or prostrates, some of them fall from him.”

[Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubraa, 3/10; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’]

Al-Manaawi (explaining the above hadeeth) said:What is meant is that every time a pillar (essential part) of the prayer is completed, part of his sins fall from him, until when he finishes his prayer, all his sins will be removed. This is in a prayer where all the conditions are met and the essential parts are complete. What we understand from the words “slave” and “stands” is that he is standing before the King of Kings [Allaah] in the position of a humble slave.”

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying,

“If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet added, “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (removes our) evil deeds.”

[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 10, Hadith 506; Sahih Muslim Book 4, Hadith 1410]

Narrated Anas bin Malik:While I was with the Prophet (s.a.w) a man came and said,

"O Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) ! I have committed a legally punishable sin; please inflict the legal punishment on me'.' The Prophet (s.a.w) did not ask him what he had done. Then the time for the prayer became due and the man offered prayer along with the Prophet (s.a.w) , and when the Prophet (s.a.w) had finished his prayer, the man again got up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) ! I have committed a legally punishable sin; please inflict the punishment on me according to Allah's Laws." The Prophet (s.a.w) said, "Haven't you prayed with us?' He said, "Yes." The Prophet (s,a,w) said, "Allah has forgiven your sin." or said, "....your legally punishable sin."

[Sahih Bukhaari, Vol. 8, Book 82, Hadith 812]

4. Do Dhikr (Tasbeeh and Adhkaar) after every Salah (prayer)

It is reported by Abu Hurayrah from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“Whoever glorifies Allaah (says Subhaan Allaah) thirty-three (33) times immediately after each prayer, and praises Allaah (says Al-hamdu Lillaah) thirty-three times, and magnifies Allaah (says Allaahu akbar) thirty-three times, this makes ninety-nine, then to complete one hundred says

Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer (There is no god except Allaah Alone, with no partner, His is the power and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things) – his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.”

[Reported by Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 1243;  Muwatta Maalik in Book 15, Hadith 22]

5. Feeling ashamed of a sin and praying salat al-Tawbah (i.e prayer of repentance)

Narrated by Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

Allah forgives the man who commits a sin (then feels ashamed), purifies himself (by doing wudu), offers a prayer (of 2 or 4 rak'ah ) then asks Allaah for forgiveness (sincerely), but Allaah will forgive him

Then he recited the ‘ayyah: ‘And those who, when they do an evil thing (illegal sexual intercourse) or wrong themselves (i.e sins), remember Allâh and implore forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allâh? – and will not knowingly repeat (the wrong) they did. The reward of such will be forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever- a bountiful reward for workers.”‘ [al-'lmrân: 135-136].

[Abu Dawood (1521) Classed as sahaah by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood ; An-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, al-Baihaqi, and at-Tirmidhî who calls it hasan.]

I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I do. I acknowledge Your blessing and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for there is none who can forgive sin except You.”

He (s.a.w) said: “Whoever says this during the day, believing in it firmly, and dies on that day before evening comes, he will be one of the people of Paradise, and whoever says it at night, believing firmly in it, and dies before morning comes, he will be one of the people of Paradise.”

Astagfirullah Al'azeemal Lazi Laa Ilaaha Illa huwal Hayyul Qayyum wa Atoobu Ilaihi

I seek forgiveness from Allah the Almighty, besides whom there is no God, the Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to him;

[Sahih Al Bukhaari ,Vol. 2, Book 13, Hadith 8 (2) Sunan Abi Dawud 1050]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever says: Glory is to Allah (in another narration it states morning and evening), and with His Praise (Subhan Allah, Wa Bihamdih)’ a hundred times, his sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.” (Sahih)

[Ref: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3466, 3469]

The Mesenger of Allah said: Whoever says: ‘There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists and to Him belongs the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is Powerful over all things, (La Ilaha Illallah, Wahdahu La Sharika Lahi, Lahul-Mulku Wa Lahul-Hamdu, Yuhyi Wa Yumitu, Wa Huwa Ala Kulli Shai’in Qadir)’ a hundred times in a day, it will be for him the quivalent of freeing ten slaves, and there shall be written for him a hundred good deeds, and a hundred bad deeds shall be wiped out for him, and it will be a protection for him from Shaitan on that day, until he reaches the evening. And none has brought better than it, except for one who has done more than that.”And with this chain, from the Prophet, that he said: “Whoever says: ‘Glory is to Allah, and with His Praise (Subhan Allah, Wa Bihamdih)’ a hundred times, his sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.” (Sahih)

(Narrated by Muslim, 1576).

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

‘There is no Muslim man who dies, and forty men pray the funeral prayer for him, not associating anything with Allaah, but Allaah will accept their intercession for him.’”

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If the imaam says ‘Aameen,’ then say ‘Aameen’ too, for whoever says ‘Aameen’ and it coincides with the ‘Aameen’ of the angels, will have all his previous sins forgiven.”

[Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 747]

14. Saying "Allahumma Rabanna wa Lakal Hamd" After getting up from the Rukoo'

Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) said, "When the Imam says (while getting up from rukoo'), "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah (Our lord for you is all the praise,)" you should say, "Allahumma Rabbana laka l-hamd.(Our lord for you is all the praise’,)" And if the saying of any one of you coincides with that of the angels, all his past sins will be forgiven."

[Sahih Bukhaari, Vol. 1, Book 12, Hadith 762]

15. Using The best of words in supplications to invoke Allah for forgiveness

He (s.a.w) heard a man saying in his Tashahhud:

“Allaahumma inne as’aluka yaa Allaah al-Ahad al-Samad alladhi lam yalid wa lam yoolad wa lam yakum lahu kufuwan ahad an taghfir li dhunoobi innaka anta’l-Ghafoor al-Raheem

O Allaah, I ask You O Allaah, the One, the Self-Sufficient Master, Who begets not neither is begotten, and there is none like unto Him, to forgive me my sins, for You are the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to his companions: “He has been forgiven, he has been forgiven.”

[Sunan Abi Dawud 985]

He (s.a.w) heard another man supplicating and this man was saying (a similar supplication using similar words),

Allahumma Inni As’aluka Bi Anni Ashhadu Annaka Antalllah, La Ilaha Illa Anta Al-Ahadus-Samadu, Alladhi Lam Yalid Wa Lam Yulad, Wa Lam Yakun Lahu Kufuwan Ahad

O Allah, indeed, I ask you by my testifying that You are Allah, there is none worthy of worship except You, the One, As-Samad, the one who does not beget, nor was begotten, and there is none who is like Him

He (the prophet s.a.w) then said : ‘By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he has asked Allah by His Greatest Name, the one which of He is called upon by it, He responds, and when He is asked by it, He gives.

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3475]

At the end of this dua'a ( kufuwan ahad...) you may add whatever you want to ask from Allah, for e.g you may say : An-tagh firli Dhunoobi Innaka anta tawaabur raheem

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:"I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and a man was standing and praying. When he bowed, prostrated and recited the tashahhud, he supplicated, and in his supplication he said:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ بَدِيعُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ يَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ إِنِّي ..أَسْأَلُكَ

Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anna lakal-hamd, lailaha illa ant, al-mannanu badi'us-samawati wal-ard, ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram! Ya hayyu ya qayyum! Inni as'aluka.

O Allah, indeed I ask You since all praise is due to You, there is none worthy of worship but You, the Bestower, the Creator of the heavens and earth, O Possessor of majesty and honor, O Ever-living, O-Eternal, I ask of You....

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to his companions: “Do you know by what did he ask Allaah?” They said, “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, he asked Allaah by His greatest Name (ismuhu’l-a’zam) which, when He is called by it, He responds, and if He is asked by it, He gives.”

After Inni As'aluka (I ask you..) you may add whatever you want to ask from Allah, for e.g you may say : innee as’aluka al-jannah wa a’oodhu bika min an-naar (I ask You for Paradise and I seek refuge with You from Hell)

[Sunan An-Nasaa'ee, Vol. 2, Book 13, Hadith 1301, (For more such du’aas see Sifat al-Salaah by al-‘Allaamah al-Albaani, p.163, 11th edn.]

16. Giving the Adhaan when one is isolated or at an odd place

On the authority of Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:"I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w ) say:

'Your Lord is pleased with a shepherd high in the mountains who calls the Adhan for the prayer and prays. Allah says: 'Look at this slave of Mine; he calls the Adhan and Iqamah for the prayer and fears Me. I have forgiven My slave and admitted him to Paradise.'"

[Ref: An-Nasaa'ee Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 667, reported by Imam al-Nawawee in 40 hadeeth qudsi 7]

17. The Muaddhin who gives the Adhaan and the one who responds to the Adhaan (by coming to pray)

'The Mu'adhdhin's sins will be forgiven as far as his voice reaches, and every wet and dry thing will pray for forgiveness for him. For the one who attends the prayer, twenty-five Hasanat (good deeds) will be recorded, and it is will be expiation (for sins committed) between them (the two prayers).'

[ Sunan Ibn Majah 724; Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah 598; Al- Mundhari, Targheeb wa Tarheeb 1/143 - classed as Hasan Saheeh in Saheeh al Targheeb and reported by others as well]

18.Supplication (Dua'a) one makes upon hearing the Adhaan (Azaan)

Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas narrated that the Prophet  said,  “He who says upon hearing the person calling the Adhaan (i.e the Muaddhin),

I also bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone without a partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. I am pleased with Allaah as a Lord,  Islam as a religion and Muhammad as a messenger,’

He (s.a.w) continued " ...- all his previous  sins will be forgiven.”

[Sunan Ibn Maajah, 721, Sahih].

19. Supplicating to Allah with this Dua'a before getting up from any meeting/gathering

Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:

“Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Subhanaka Allahumma Wa Bihamdika Wa Ashhadu An La Ilaha Illa Anta, Astaghfiruka Wa Atubu Ilaik

‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You,"

He (s.a.w) continued :.... (then) whatever occurred in that sitting would be forgiven to him..

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3433; Ibn al-'Arabi in 'Aaradh al-Ahwadhi 7/34, Sahih; Sahih al-Tirmidhi 3433; Saheeh al-Jaami' 6192; Ibn Hajar said this is Hassan in Takhreej Mishqat al Masaabeh 3/8 and Sahih in An-Nukat 'Ala Kitab 2/716;  Al-Baihaqi in Kitab ad-D'wat Al-kabir; By Ibn Katheer ;Suyooti and others]

Sickness: ‘Aa’ishah narrated that the Prophet  said,

“Whenever a believer becomes sick, he will be purified from his sins, just as fire purifies steel.”

[Al-Bukhaari].

In another report the prophet (s.a.w) was recorded to say

“A Muslim is not afflicted by hardship, sickness, sadness, worry, harm, or depressioneven if pricked by a thorn but Allah expiates his sins because of that”

[Bukhaari Book 70 Hadith 544 and Muslim]

21. Fasting the fast of Ashura and 'Arafah

Abu Qataadah (r.a) narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w) said,

“Fasting the day of ‘Arafah expiates for the sins of two years the previous year and the coming year, and fasting ‘Aashooraa’ expiates for the previous year.”

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Our Lord comes down to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains, and says, ‘Who will call upon Me so that I may answer him? Who will ask Me so that I may give to him? Who will seek My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?’”

(Narrated by Muslim, no. 758)

23. To bear Trials and hardships with patience and seek Allah's help and support

Shaddad ibn Aws (radhiallahu `anhu) entered with them upon the one who was sick and asked " How are you this morning?" He replied (despite being sick) " I am with Allah's blessing this morning"  So Shaddad (radhiallahu `anhu) told him " Bear Glad tidings for having your sins compensated and your mistakes removed for i heard the The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam) saying :

“Allah who is Great and Glorious says, ‘When I afflict a servant of Mine who is a believer and he praises Me, for the affliction I have brought upon him; he will rise from that couch of his as sinless as he was the day his mother gave birth to him.’ The Rabb, Who is Blessed and Exalted, will say, ‘I fettered and afflicted My servant, so record for him what you were recording for him when he was well.’”

[Ref: Musnad Ahmad 28/344; Shamela . Shaykh Shu`ayb Arnaout graded it saheeh ligayrihi. - elsewhere it comes as "Inni" ; - In Another nuskha it means "his reward has been affixed" .]

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Trial ( hardships) will continue to befall the believing man and woman, with regard to themselves, their children and their wealth, until they meet Allaah with no sin on them.”

[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2399; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 2280]

And it was narrated that Jaabir said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “

On the Day of Resurrection, when people who had suffered affliction are given their reward, those who were healthy will wish their skins had been cut to pieces with scissors when they were in the world.”

[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2402. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, no. 2206]

It was narrated from Ma’qil ibn Yasaar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Worshipping at times of tribulation and confusion is like migrating to join me.”

[Narrated by Muslim, 2948]

Al-Nawawi said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘Worshipping at times of tribulation and confusion is like migrating to join me.’ The reason why worship at such times is of such great virtue is that people become negligent about worship and are distracted from it, and no one focuses on worship except a few.”

Al-Qurtubi said: “Tribulation and great hardship will happen until the matter of religion is taken lightly and people will care about nothing but their worldly affairs and how to earn a living. So worship becomes very important at times of tribulation, as Muslim narrated from Ma’qil ibn Yasaar in the marfoo’ report: ‘Worshipping at times of tribulation and confusion is like migrating to join me.’”

‘Al-hamdu Lillaahi allahi at’amani haadha wa razaqnihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa laa quwwata

his previous sins will be forgiven.”

26. Reciting the Dua'a while wearing a garment

Narrated Mu'adh ibn Anas: The Prophet (s.a.w) said:

[Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Hasan al Albaanee, Some scholars have classified this to be weak]

27. Forgiving and letting go others of the debts they own you

Narrated Hudhaifa: I heard the Prophet (s.a.w) saying,

"Once a man died and was asked, 'What did you use to say (or do) (in your life time)?' He replied, 'I was a businessman and used to give time to the rich to repay his debt and (used to) deduct part of the debt of the poor.' So he was forgiven (his sins.)"

57- 415 – From Abu Hurairah on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- who said: “Whoever says when he goes to his bed to sleep:

‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, He has the Dominion and for Him is all praise. He is capable of all things, there is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah, far is Allaah from imperfection and praise is for Him, there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah and Allaah is the Greatest,

Then his sins are forgiven – or his mistakes – even if they were like the foam on the sea.”

30. Reciting this Du`a morning and evening

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “One should say in the morning: O Allah, we have reached morning, calling you to witness, calling the carriers of your throne to witness, your angels, and all of creation that you are Allah and none has the right to be worshiped but you alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad is your servant and messenger. If he says this, Allah will forgive him for what he did during the day. If he says it in the evening, Allah will forgive his sins during the night.”

[Ref: Sunan At-TIrmidhi 3501; Hasan by Shaykh Albaanee, Zubayr `ali Zaee, and Ibn Hajar asqalani]

Another hadeeth speaks of reciting this du`a in the evening as well but the wordings change from asbahtu (morning) to amsaytu

If you want to avoid the plural form of du`a then instead of nashadu say ash-hadu

the singular version would be :

Allahumma inni asbahtu ushiduka wa ush-hidu hamalata `arshika .......the rest is same

For evening : Allahumma inni amsaytu ush-hiduka wa ush-hidu hamalata `arshika....the rest is same

 31. Some Other methods to have our Sins forgiven

Anas bin Malik narrated that:the Prophet passed by a tree with dry leaves, so he struck it with his staff, making the leaves fall. Then he said: “Indeed, all praise is due to Allah, (Al-Hamdulillah)’ ‘glory to Allah, (Subhan Allah)’ none has the right to be worshipped by Allah, (La Ilaha Illallah)’ and ‘Allah is the greatest (Allahu Akbar)’ cause the sins to fall from the worshipper, just as the leaves of this tree fall.” (Hasan)

[Sunan Tirmidhi , Book 48, Hadith 164]

From Anas – RadhiAllaahu anhu – who said:

‘A Bedouin came to the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – and said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah!  Teach me some goodness.’

So the Prophet  – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – took him by the hand and said:

” قل: سبحان الله، والحمد لله، ولا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر.

‘Say: ‘Far is Allaah from imperfection, and all praise be to Allaah, and there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest.’

The Bedouin counted them on his hand, when he finished he began to reflect then came back to the Prophet.

The Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – smiled and said:

 ‘The desperate one has reflected.’

Then the Bedouin came and said:

‘O Messenger of Allaah! ‘Far is Allaah from imperfection, and all praise be to Allaah, and there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest.’  This is for Allaah, what is for me?’

The Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said:

اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني وعافني وارزقني واهدني

‘Say: O Allaah forgive me, and have mercy on me, and pardon me, and provide for me, and guide me.’

The Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said to him:

‘O Bedouin! If you say: ‘SubhanAllah’, Allaah says: ‘you have spoken the truth,

If you say: ‘Alhamdulillah’, Allaah says: ‘ you have spoken the truth, If you say: ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’, Allaah says: ‘you have spoken the truth,

If you say: Allaahu Akbar, Allaah says: ‘you have spoken the truth, If you say: O Allaah forgive me, Allaah says: I have done so,

If you say: O Allaah have mercy on me, Allaah says: I have done so, If you say: O Allaah give me provision, Allaah says: I have done so,

Then the Bedouin  counted it seven times on his fingers,  then went away.’

Shaykh al-Muhaddith al-Albaani -Rahimullaah – said :

Collected by al-Bayhaqi in ‘Shuab al-Eemaan’, and this Isnaad is Jayyid (good) its narrators are trustworthy as for al-Hasan bin Tawab; then I had become exhausted searching about him until I found who he was. So I performed a Sajdah to Allaah thankful for His success and I ask Him for an increase in His excellence.’

  1. Some Hadiths seem to indicate that (assuming a person did not do Shirk), doing a particular deed forgives his all sins except Haq ul Ibaad , Rights of servants.
e.g- A Hadith says that a martyr's all sins are forgiven except debt.
Perhaps this point need to be mentioned in the article, may be closer to the the paragraphs where scholars differ whether sins forgiven are major or minor.
