Allah Says "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers" [Qur'an 49:11]
Assalamu 'Alaikum. This is a huge topic because Islaam is a religion which promotes equality, brotherhood and abolishes falsehood in more than a million ways. From gathering the kings and slaves together in the row of our daily prayer to spreading the Islamic greeting (Assalamu 'Alaikum) to every Muslim irrespective of him being rich or poor, white or black, - Islam not only preaches, but also helps us implement equality in a variety of easy ways.
(I) GOOD MANNERS : AN ANTIDOTE TO RACISM AND INEQUALITY
Can you imagine if everyone in the world becomes civilized and mannered such that the poor become equal to the rich in regards to treatment, and the strong become alike the weak in regards to preference? Without lecturing ahead, i will assume that the title of this sub topic (I) is sufficient to help the reader gauge the importance of manners to eradicate and abolish racism.
Almost every other hadeeth and religious book in Islaam has a chapter/book dedicated to narrating the manners of the prophet (s.a.w) , his companions (sahaabas) and the righteous predecessors (salaafus saaliheen) so much so that it is difficult to compile or collect them all in a blog post. So one can understand the importance of manners. However a few more hadeeth below just to add a touch to this topic for those who aren't aware.
Sufyan Ath-Thawri would say, “When a man intended to write the Prophet’s sayings, he would study good manners and worship for twenty years before that.”
[Abu Na’eem, Hilyat al-Awliya 361]
1. You (O Muhammad) are of the highest noble character. [ Surah Al–Qalam (68): 4]
2. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Indeed, I have only been sent to complete the noblest of manners.” [Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Ahmad, Al-Hakim]
3. Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never used bad language neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." [Bukhari & Muslim]
4. Narrated Ummul Mu'minin, Aisha: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “By his good character a believer will attain the degree of one who prays during the night and fasts during the day.” [Abu Dawood, Al-Hakim]
5. Narrated AbudDarda': The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “There is nothing heavier than good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dawood]
6. Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “He who does not show mercy to our little ones or recognize the rights of our elders is not one of us.” [Musnad Ahmad, Number 7033, Sahih]
7. Prophet (s.a.w) said " and however you love for the people to treat you, then treat them that way; and however you hate for the people to treat you, then do not treat them that way.” [At-Tabarani, Al-Ma’jam Al-Kabeer, Number 15833, Sahih]

(II) WHAT DOES THE QUR'AN SAY ABOUT RACISM, EQUALITY AND GOOD CONDUCT
One of the root cause of racism is arrogance. A person's arrogance causes him to differentiate between himself and others in a racist way
Do not walk proudly on the earth; your feet cannot tear apart the earth nor are you as tall as the mountains.[ Qur'an 17:37]
O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun. Verily, Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Al-Hujurat 49:13)
Asbaab Al Nuzool (Cause of the revelation of this verse) |
This verse was revealed on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. When it was time for prayer, the Holy Prophet asked Sayyidna Bilal to call the adhan. One of the pagan Quraish cynically remarked: "Thank God that my father died before this happened, and he did not have to see this bad day. Harith Ibn Hisham remarked: Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black crow to sound the adhan in the Sacred Mosque! Abu Sufyan said: I do not wish to utter anything for fear that the master of the heavens will inform him. Thus Jibra'il came down and informed the Holy Prophet about this conversation. The Holy Prophet called then and asked them about it. They admitted. At this, the current verse was revealed. [Maulana Muhammad Taqi Usmani - Ma'ariful Quran - Volume 8 - Pages 143-144] |
Nevertheless, Tafseer Ibn Katheer mentions a similar story, further explaining the meaning of this verse and he stated a long hadith at the end of which the prophet (s.a.w) gathered the people and said : |
O people! Allah the Exalted has removed from you the slogans of Jahiliyyah and its tradition of honoring forefathers. Men are of two types, a man who is righteous, fearful of Allah and honorable to Allah, or a man who is vicious, miserable and little to Allah the Exalted. Verily, Allah the Exalted and Most Honored said ....."Al Hujarat 49:13" |

(11) O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. (12). O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicion is sin. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother You would hate it. And have Taqwa of Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful [Al Hujarat 49: 11-12]
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Qur'an 76:8]
Serve Allah and join not any partners with Him: and do good to parents kinsfolk orphans those in need neighbors who are near neighbors who are strangers the companion by your side the way-farer (ye meet) and what your right hands possess: for Allah loveth not the arrogant the vainglorious [Qur'an 4:36]

There are more verses enjoining equality and good manners and forbidding defaming or slandering such as surah Al Humazah and etc but I'll keep it short. All these qualities (manners, equality and etc. are the foundations to build on so as to demolish racism)
(III) WHAT DO THE AHADEETH [TRADITIONS OF THE PROPHET (S.A.W)] SAY ABOUT RACISM
1) The Prophet (s.a.w) foretold about people being infected with pride and racism
Abu Malik al-Ashari narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: ”There are four matters of jaahiliyyah (ignorance) that exist among my ummah and they will not give them up: boasting about one’s forefathers, casting aspersions (slander/insult) upon people’s lineages, seeking rain by the stars and wailing for the dead.” [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 2 pg. 644) No. 934]
Abu Huraira said: Allah's Messenger (SAW) said: Indeed, Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds." (Sahih Muslim, #2564).
Allaah says: {The believers are but a brotherhood.} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49): 10]
Narrated Anas: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "None of you will have faith (imaan) till he likes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." [Bukhari]
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allaah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allaah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allaah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection." [Bukhari]
Narrated Abu Hurairah: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said,"Allaah helps the servant as long as the servant helps his brother" [Muslim]
Narrated Nauman bin Bashir: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The parable of the believers in relation to the kindness, mercy and compassion they have for each other, is that of the body: when an organ of it falls ill, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness." [Bukhari]
Narrated Abu Musa: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other." The Prophet then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced (while saying that). [Bukhari]
TO TREAT MUSLIM OR NON- MUSLIM WITH RESPECT AND MERCY AND TO GIVE THEIR RIGHTS
1) The topic of manners and the verses of the Qur'an which speak about being humble, merciful and best in manners and character are general commandments applying upon all. Hence a Muslim when ordered to be of good manner and character, has to be so with both a Muslim as well as a Non Muslim.

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Leadership, Number 3052, Sahih]
2) Prophet (s.a.w) thus preached for unity and equality and to give the rights.
Allaah says: {The believers are but a brotherhood.} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49): 10]

A number of the sons of the Prophet’s companions reported on the authority of their fathers: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “If anyone wrongs a person protected by a peace treaty (Non Muslim), detracts from his rights, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, then I will plead for him on the Day of Resurrection.”
4) Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years
[Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 391]
5) Hisham reported on the authority of his father that Hisham b. Hakim b. Hizam happened to pass by people, the farmers of Syria, who had been made to stand in the sun. He said: What is the matter with them? They said: They have been detained for Jizya. Thereupon Hisham said: I bear testimony to the fact that I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah would torment those who torment people in the world

3) Prophet (s.a.w) makes no difference between a rich or a poor or one who is honored in the society or not with regards to the punishment of Allah
Al-Bara' b. 'Azib reported:
There happened to pass by Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) a Jew blackened and lashed. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) called them (the Jews) and said: Is this the punishment that you find in your Book (Torah) as a prescribed punishment for adultery? They said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) called one of the scholars amongst them and said: I ask you in the name of Allah Who sent down the Torah on Moses if that is the prescribed punishment for adultery that you find in your Book. He said: No. Had you not asked me in the name of Allah, I would not have given you this information. We find stoning to death (as punishment prescribed in the Torah). But this (crime) became quite common amongst our aristocratic (upper/rich) class. So when we caught hold of any rich person (indulging in this offence) we spared him, but when we caught hold of a helpless person we imposed the prescribed punishment upon him. We then said: Let us argree (on a punishment) which we can inflict both upon the rich and the poor. So We decided to blacken the face with coal and flog as a substitute punishment for stoning. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I am the first to revive Thy command when they had made it dead......(cont : http://sunnah.com/urn/242140]
[Ref: Sahih Muslim Book 17, Hadith 4214, Sunan Ibn Majah : Arabic : Book 20, Hadith 2655]
'A'isha reported that the Quraish had been anxious about the Makhzumi woman who had committed theft, and said: Who will speak to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) about her? They said: Who dare it, but Usama, the loved one of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)? So Usama spoke to him. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah? He then stood up and addressed (people) saying: O people, those who have gone before you were destroyed, because if any one of high rank committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and it anyone of low rank committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would have her hand cut off. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Ibn Rumh (the words are):" Verily those before you perished."
[Ref: Sahih Muslim, The Book Pertaining to Punishments Prescribed by Islam (Kitab Al-Hudud), Hadeeth No. 4187,4188]
O Allah, whoever is given charge over my nation (ruler) and he is harsh with them (his subjects), then be harsh with him; and whoever is given charge over my nation and he is gentle with them, then be gentle with him.”
[Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Number 4494]
4) PROPHET (S.A.W) URGED TO TREAT SLAVES AS YOU WOULD TREAT YOURSELVES
This topic has a lot of ahadeeth out of which i shall mention only a few
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would visit the sick, attend the funeral, respond to the invitation of slaves.....
[Ref: Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Asceticism, Number 4178]
Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined good treatment of slaves and he would say, “Feed them from the same food you eat and clothe them from the same clothes you wear; and do not torture the creation of Allah the Exalted.”
[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 188, Sahih]
in another narration from Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 4095, the prophet (s.a.w) ended his statement by saying "and do not burden them with work beyond their capabilities.”
Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “None of you strikes his slave unjustly except that the slave will be granted retaliation on the Day of Resurrection.”
[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 181, Sahih]
Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never struck a woman with his hand and neither a servant, and he never struck anything with his hand except when he was struggling in the cause of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah did not take revenge for anything against himself but if the sacred law of Allah was violated, he would take retribution for the sake of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah was not presented two matters except that he would choose the easier one as long as it was not sinful, but if it was sinful he would be the furthest of the people from it.
[Musnad Ahmad, Number 27658, Sahih]
Aisha reported: Abu Bakr once cursed some of his slaves, so the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “O Abu Bakr! Those who curse or those who are true? No, by the Lord of the Ka’bah!” And he said it two or three times. One that very day, Abu Bakr freed some of his slaves; then, the Prophet came to him and he said, “Do not do it again.”
[Al-Bukhari, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Number 319, Sahih]
Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported: When I was beating my servant, I heard a voice behind me (saying): "Abu Mas'ud, bear in mind Allah has more dominance over you than you have upon him". I turned and (found him) to be Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). I said: Allah's Messenger, I set him free for the sake of Allah. Thereupon, he said: "Had you not done that, (the gates of) Hell would have opened for you, or the fire would have burnt you."
[Sahih Muslim, Book 15, Number 4088 or chapter of Al-Iman (1659), Abu-Dawud (5159), Al-Tirmizi (1948), Ahmad (22404), Al-Bukhari: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1/264 (173), and Al-Tabarani: Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir (683) ]

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Marriage, Number 2053, Sahih]
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, “When your servant brings your food to you, if you do not ask him to join you, then at least ask him to take one or two handfuls, for he has suffered from its heat (while cooking it) and has taken pains to cook it nicely.”
[Volume 7, Book 65, Number 370 : Sahih Bukhari]
Narrated Abu Huraira:

[Volume 7, Book 65, Number 370 : Sahih Bukhari]
Note: There are numerous ahadeeth on this topic.
5) PROPHET COMMANDED RESPECTING A RULER EVEN IF HE WERE A SLAVE
Amir ibn Wathila reported: Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith met Umar at Usfan and Umar had employed him as a collector in Mecca. Umar said to him, “Who have you appointed as a collector for the people of the valley?” He said, “Ibn Abza.” Umar said, “Who is Ibn Abza?” He said, “He is one of our emancipated slaves.” Umar said, “You have appointed a freed slave over them?” He said, “He is learned in the Book of Allah the Exalted and he is knowledgeable of the religious commandments.” Umar said: It is as your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah raises the status of a people with this Book and he debases others.”
[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 1780]
"Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle said, "You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin."
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256]
Moreover, a slave is not be addressed with hurtful words. The Prophet of Mercy stated not to address them as, ‘My slave boy or my slave girl.” He said, “All of you are salves of God!” Address them with, “O my young man, O my young lady!”[Sahih Muslim]
Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second ruler-caliph of Islam, was so fond of Salim, a freed slave, that he wished to appoint Salim to be the ruler-caliph if he were alive. Salim used to lead the Muslims in prayer, considered an honor in Islamic tradition.

6) ISLAM DOES NOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN COLOR
"Narrated By 'Ata bin Abi Rabah : Ibn 'Abbas said to me, "Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise?" I said, "Yes." He said, "This black lady came to the Prophet and said, 'I get attacks of epilepsy and my body becomes uncovered; please invoke Allah for me.' The Prophet said (to her), 'If you wish, be patient and you will have (enter) Paradise; and if you wish, I will invoke Allah to cure you.' She said, 'I will remain patient,' and added, 'but I become uncovered, so please invoke Allah for me that I may not become uncovered.' So he invoked Allah for her."
"Narated By Abu Huraira : A black man or a black woman used to sweep the mosque and he or she died. The Prophet asked about her (or him). He was told that she (or he) had died. He said, "Why did you not inform me? Show me his grave (or her grave)." So he went to her (his) grave and offered her (his) funeral prayer."
Note: Notice that Muhammad (s.a.w) was upset because they did not inform him of the black person's death! Also notice how prophet (s.a.w) offered the funeral prayer AFTER the black person was buried and in the grave. That's how concerned and favourable he was.
Narrated Abu Huraira: At the time of the Fajr prayer the Prophet asked bilal , "Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise." bilal replied, "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me."
Sahih Bukhari, Book #21, Hadith #250
Note: Bilal (r.a) was a black Ethiopian slave before Abu bakr freed him from the atrocities inflicted upon him due to his acceptance of Islaam
7) NO ONE IS SUPERIOR TO EACH OTHER EXCEPT IN PIETY
"The prophet, peace be upon him, said: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any "superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood.
