How many Muslims know this ?

How many Muslims know this ?
How many Muslims know this ?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him (Uthman) his daughter Ruqayyah in marriage and when she died, he married her sister Um Kulthum, therefore, he was nicknamed by "Dhun-Nurayn (the possessor of two lights)". Uthman (r.a) is the Only man who married 2 of prophet's daughters ! What a status !

AL MUGHEERA AND IBN UMAR ADVISED UTHMAN

On the authority of Nafi` that `Abdullaah Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما said:

“`Uthmaan (Ibn `Affaan رضي الله عنه) consulted me when he was under siege (by the rebels who captured his house and kept him and his wives inside, stopping food and other supplies), he said: ‘What is your opinion about what al-Mugheerah bin al-Akhnas* رضي الله عنه has said?’

I (Abdullah Ibn Umar) asked: ‘What did he say?’
`Uthmaan said: ‘He (al-Mugheerah r.a) said: These people (i.e. the Khawaarij) want you give up this matter (i.e. the Khilaafah) and that you handover the matter to them.’

[In the narration of Ibn Sa`d it is that `Uthmaan said: ‘They want me to give up (the Khilaafah). And if I do,
they will let me live and if I don’t they will kill me.’]

I said: ‘Do you see that by handing it over to them, will you live forever in this world?’

He said: ‘No!’

I said: ‘If you do not do this, can they do anything more than to kill you?’

He said: ‘No!’

I said: ‘Do they own the Paradise and the Hellfire?’

He said: ‘No!’

I said: ‘I do not see any reason for you to introduce this matter (of giving up the ruler-ship  in the religion, so that whenever they (the people) are discontent with the ruler that they remove him. So do not give up the dress (i.e. the Khilaafah) which  Allaah عز وجل dressed you with.’”

[Imaam Ahmad mentioned it in “Fadhaail al-Sahaabah” (No. 767, pg. 1/473) and Ibn Sa`d in Tabaqaat al-Kubraa (3/66)]

Note: The prophet (s.a.w) himself commanded Uthman (r.a) with the same advise which Abdullah Ibn Umar (r.a) gave

At-Tirmidhy reported in his Sunan from the Hadith of `A'ishah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O `Uthman, perhaps Allah shall make you wear a garment however if they want you to take it off, do not give it to them

[p. 579, No. 3705, Albanee graded it to be saheeh in Sahih Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3/210, no. 2923]

* al-Mugheerah bin al-Akhnas رضي الله عنه was a companion. His mother Khaalidah was the aunt of `Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. He resembled `Uthmaan رضي الله عنه in appearance and died defending him when the Khawaarij surrounded `Uthmaan’s house and attacked it. In Usud al-Ghaabah it is mentioned that when the Khawaarij burned down the door to `Uthmaan’s house, al-Mugheerah said to `Uthmaan: “By Allaah! Lest the people say that we have betrayed you”, then he picked up his sword and went charging against the Khawaarij. via ilm4all blog

2. IBN UMAR (R.A) DEFENDED HIM AGAINST THE ANSAARI

Saalim reported from him father, `Abdullaah ibn `Umar رضي الله عنهما that he said:

“One of the people from al-Ansaar came to me during the Caliphate of `Uthmaan رضي الله عنه and spoke with me; and he wanted me to speak out against `Uthmaan, and he spoke for a long time. He was a man with a heavy tongue (i.e. he didn’t speak clearly) and it was difficult for me to understand him with ease.

So when he finished his talk, I said to him: ‘We used to say this when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was still alive: ‘The most virtuous people from the Ummah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after him were Abu Bakr, then `Umar, then `Uthmaan’, and by Allaah! We do not know that `Uthmaan has killed anyone unjustly (so that we can retaliate against him) nor did he commit any major sin. Rather it is this wealth (which you are after), if he gives it to you, you become pleased. And if he gives it to his near ones you become dissatisfied. Rather you want to behave like the Persians and the Romans, who do not find a ruler except that they kill him.’

Then the man’s eyes overflowed with tears and he said: ‘O Allaah! We do not want that.’
(i.e. he repented from speaking against `Uthmaan).”

[Ref: Abu Bakr bin al-Khallaal in his “al-Sunnah” (No. 546, pg. 1/386)]

 A man came to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) wanting him to abuse the Khalifah. So he said to the man, "It‟s all about money! If they give you, you become pleased. But if they give their relatives it annoys you. You only like to copy the Persians and Romans; they never left any of their leaders except that they killed him!" Then tears flowed down Ibn Umar's cheeks while he supplicated, "O Allah! We don't want that!"

3) THEY TESTIFIED HE WAS A MARTYR YET SLANDERED HIM

At-Tirmidhy reported in his Sunan from the Hadith of Thumamah ibn Hazn Al Qushayry who said:

I was present in the house when `Uthman approached them and said: Bring me your two friends who stirred you against me.

He said: They were brought to him as if they were two camels or two donkeys. He said: `Uthman approached them and said:

I ask you by the name of Allah and Islam, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Medina while there was no fresh water therein but Rumah Well? Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Who would buy the Rumah Well and give water to Muslims for a better well in Paradise? Thereupon, I bought it from my money, but today you prevent me from drinking therefrom until I drink from sea water

They said: By Allah, this is true.

He (Uthman) said: I ask you by the name of Allah and Islam, do you know that the Masjid did not encompass the people who were offering Salah therein, thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Who would buy the land of so and so to expand the Masjid for a better land in Paradise? Thereupon, I bought it from my money, but today you prevent me to offer two Rak`ahs therein? They said: By Allah, this is true.
He said: I ask you by the name of Allah and Islam, do you know that I equipped the army of hardship from my money? They said: By Allah, this is true.

{Added Note: At-Tirmidhy reported from the Hadith of `Abdur-Rahman ibn Samurah that he said: `Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with one thousand dinars.Al Hasan ibn Waqi` said: In another position of my book: in his sleeve when he equipped the army of hardship then spread them in his lap. `Abdur-Rahman said: I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) stirring them in his lap and said: "Nothing will harm `Uthman after today (twice). (Sahih al tirmidhi 3/208) Az-Zuhry said: `Uthman ibn `Affan equipped the Muslim army in the battle of Tabuk with 940 camels and 60 horses.}

Then he said: I ask you by the name of Allah and Islam, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was on Thabir (a mountain between Makkah and `Arafah) with Abu Bakr, `Umar, and me, so, the mountain moved until its rocks fell down. He said: He (the Messenger of Allah) kicked it with his leg and said: "O Thabir, calm down, for there is a Prophet, a truthful person, and a martyr on you." They said: By Allah, this is true. He said: Allahu Akbar, by the Lord of Ka`bah, they bear witness that I am a martyr (three times)

{Added note : It was reported in Sahih Al Bukhari from the Hadith of Qatadah that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: The Prophet (peace be upon him) ascended the mountain of Uhud and Abu Bakr, `Umar and 'Uthman were accompanying him. The mountain gave a shake (i.e. trembled underneath them). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "O Uhud ! Be calm." I think that the Prophet (peace be upon him) hit it with his foot, adding, "For upon you there are none but a Prophet, a Siddiq and two martyrs. Tirmidhi p. 706, No. 3697.}

[Tirmidhi pg 579, Hadith 3703]

4) IBN UMAR DEFENDED UTHMAN AGAIN AGAINST AN EGYPTIAN

Al Bukhari reported in his Sahih from the Hadith of Ibn Mawhab who said: An Egyptian who came and performed the Hajj to the Ka`bah saw some people sitting. He enquired,

"Who are these people?"

Somebody said, "They are the tribe of Quraysh."

He said: "Who is the old man sitting amongst them?"

The people replied: "He is `Abdullah ibn `Umar."

He said: "O Ibn `Umar! I want to ask you about something; could you tell me about? Do you  know that `Uthman fled away on the day (of the battle) of Uhud?"

Ibn `Umar said: "Yes."

The (Egyptian) man said: "Do you know that `Uthman was absent on the day (of the Battle) of Badr and did not join it?"

Ibn `Umar said: "Yes." The man said:

"Do you know that he failed to attend Ar-Ridwan pledge and did not witness it (i.e. Hudaybiyah pledge of allegiance)?"

Ibn `Umar said: "Yes."

The man said: "Allahu Akbar!"

Ibn `Umar said: "Let me explain to you (all these three things).

As for his flight on the day of Uhud, I testify that Allah has excused him and forgiven

him;

{Note: there is a verse in the Qur'an speaking of this}

and as for his absence from the battle of Badr, it was due to the fact that the daughter of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was his wife and she was sick then. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him: "You will receive the same reward and share (of the booty) as anyone of those who participated in the Battle of Badr (if you stay with her).

As for his absence from the Ar-Ridwan pledge of allegiance, had there been any person in Makkah more respectable than `Uthman (to be sent as a representative), Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) would have sent him instead of him. No doubt, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) had sent him, and the incident of Ar-Ridwan pledge of Allegiance happened after 'Uthman had gone to Mecca. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) held out his right hand saying: This is `Uthman's hand. He stroke his (other) hand with it saying, This (pledge of allegiance) is on the behalf of `Uthman

Then Ibn `Umar said to the man: Bear (these) excuses in mind with you ( Ibn umar (r.a) meant so deal with it even if your hate the truth }

[Sahih Bukhaari p. 706, No. 3699]

5) THE PROPHECY OF THE PROPHET (S.A.W) CAME TRUE !!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed him that he shall be killed unjustly and that was a Prophetic sign.

At-Tirmidhy reported in his Sunan from the Hadith of Ibn `Umar who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned a sedition and said: "(pointing at `Uthman) this will be killed therein unjustly."

[Al Tirmidhi pg. 580, 3708 also see Sahih Sunan al tirmidhi 3/210; no. 2925]

In another long hadeeth, the prophet (s.a.w) said "  "Give him (Uthman) glad tidings of Paradise for an affliction to hit him.

[Ref: Sahih Al Bukhari p. 705, No. 3693, and reported by Muslim p. 978, No. 2403

THERE ARE NUMEROUS VIRTUES OF UTHMAN BIN AFFAN (A.S) SUCH AS THE PROPHET AND ANGELS BEING SHY OF HIM {see Muslim p. 977, No. 2401} , AND ALLAH REVEALING VERSES SHOWING HOW HE PRAYED IN THE NIGHT WITH HUMILITY , SO ON AND SO FORTH, BUT WILL MENTION THEM SOME OTHER TIME . YOU MAY READ HIS BIOGRAPHY TO ACHIEVE NOTHING BUT TEARS AND COMPASSION FOR THIS GREAT SAHAABI, THE THIRD KHALIFA OF ISLAAM, MAY ALLAH BE WELL PLEASED WITH HIM

 HIS LAST BLOOD DROPS FELL ON THIS AAYAH :

The Aayah on which the blood of `Uthmaan ibn `Affaan’s رضي الله عنه fell when he was murdered:

فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ اللَّـهُ ۚ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ} {So Allaah will suffice for you against them; and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 137] Ibn Abu Haatim رحمه الله mentioned in his Tafseer on the authority of Ziyaad bin Yunus that Naafi` bin Abu Nu`aim informed him: One of the Khaleefah had send me with the Mus-haf (the Qur’aan) of `Uthmaan ibn `Affaan رضي الله عنه for taking care of it. Ziyaad said: I said to him: The people say that his Mus-haf was in his room when he was killed and that the blood fell on the aayah {So Allaah will suffice for you against them; and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower}.” Naafi` said: “I have seen the blood on this aayah with my own eyes.” [It is said that this Mus-haf is in Turkey, and Allaah knows best]

THE KHAWARIJ AND PROTESTORS EVEN ABUSED THE WIFE OF THE PROPHET (s.a.w)

They besieged the caliph‟s quarters and blocked food and water from getting to him for about forty days. They turned deaf ears to admonitions, persuasions and warnings for them to stop the protests and demonstrations against constituted authority.

 Umm Habeebah, one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was taking water to Uthman‟s quarters but the protesters hit her donkey in the face! She asked to raise a matter with Uthman bin Affan but they refused her, abused her and turned her back!

[Fadaail as-Sahaabah by Ahmad bin Hanbal (1/602) Graded Saheeh (authentic) by Shaykh Wasiyyullah 'Abbass in his checking of the book]

During the period, Asma bint 'Umays addressed two of her children among the protesters, she said, “The lamp burns itself but provides light for the people. Do not sin in a matter to affirm the one who has not sinned, because what you are trying to do today is for others tomorrow. So beware, this action of yours will be loss for you.” They both walked away from their mother angrily! [Fitnat Maqtal 'Uthman by Muhammad as-Sallaabee (pg. 84).]

 The wife of ‘Uthman said on the day when he was besieged: ‘Either kill him or leave him alone, forby Allah, he would recite the whole Qur’an in one rak’ah when praying qiyam al-layl.”[Saheeh Sunan Ibn Majah, 1/24 (111)]

Ishaaq ibn Rahawy in his Musnad from the route of Aflah - mawla of abu Ayyoub al-Ansaari - rahimahullah said :

`Abdullah ibn Salaam (radhiallahu `anhu) went to meet the chiefs of quraysh before the (rebellious party from the) people of Misr came (to meet uthman) and said to them (the chiefs of Quraysh): Do not kill this man meaning Uthman ibn `affan and they said " By Allah we do not wish to kill him" . But he (abdullah ibn salaam) while returning commented " By Allah they will kill him"  and then he said to them once again "  do not kill him,  By Allah he will be killed on the 40th day and the (rebels) refused and said we won't kill him. Once again after a while (ibn salam) came to them and said " Do not kill him for by Allah he will be put away on the 15th night.

[Ref: Musnad Ishaaq ibn Rahawy. Imam al-Busayri in al-Ithaaf (8/10) graded this hasan ; So did Imam suyuti in khasais al-Kubra (1/54) Shamela]

Tawoos (rahimahullah) said he asked `Abdullah ibn Salam (radhiallahu `anhu) regarding the killing of Uthman ibn `affan saying "what sign do you find about uthman in your books (of ahl al-kitaab)? He (radhiallahu `anhu) replied : " We have found (in our books) that he will be made as the judge over those who have killed and those who have let them go "

[Ref: Ibn sa`d and Ibn `Asakir have recorded this.]

Muhammad ibn Yusuf said that once his grandfather Abdullah ibn salam went to Uthman (r.a) and Uthman asked him " What do you think about fighting or Abstaining? `Abdullah ibn salam replied " Abstaining is better so as to establish Hujjah because we find in our book (of previous scriptures) that you will be made leader over those who kill and those who (hold the position of) command

[Ref: Khasais al-Kubra 1/55 shamela also see Ibn `Asakir as mentioned in the arabic text]
