1) WHO AND HOW WERE THE SAHAABAS?

This is like asking "How many stars are there in the universe?" . Yes, No exaggeration! The Sahaabas or the companions of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w)  were not an ordinary group of people; they were an extraordinary group of people. Individual as well as collective stories (of them) can be found of perseverance, hardship, sacrifice, steadfastness, unwavering iman, taqwa and tawakkul all rolled up in one when we look at what the Sahaba's went through with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم during the early days of the dawa' in Makkah to the latter days of the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم life when Islam was established in Madina and the subsequent expansion of the Islamic State through the whole of the Arabian peninsula and the remaining part of the world.

There are thousands of Books written by scores of scholars since 1434 years, beautifully and elegantly describing the sahaaba's character, virtues and example. A single short article like this one is too short and thus it is virtually impossible to jot down all about them and their virtues.

I really cannot find the deserving (best) words to define them , so i will mention only a few verses, ahadeeth and quotes, trying my best to make this compact and brief.

2) ALLAH HIMSELF PRAISES THE SAHAABAS

1. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah. And those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and falling down prostrate (in prayer), seeking Bounty from Allaah and (His) Good Pleasure. The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is on their faces (foreheads) from the traces of prostration (during prayers). This is their description in the Tawraat (Torah). But their description in the Injeel (Gospel) is like a (sown) seed which sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong, and becomes thick and it stands straight on its stem, delighting the sowers, that He may enrage the disbelievers with them. Allaah has promised those among them who believe (i.e. all those who follow Islamic Monotheism, the religion of Prophet Muhammad till the Day of Resurrection) and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness and a mighty reward (i.e. Paradise)” [Qur'an : al-Fath 48:29]

2. And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun and the Ansar and also those who followed them exactly {in Faith}. Allah is well- pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success [Quran 9:100]

3. Indeed Allah is pleased with the believers who gave you (Muhammad) a pledge under the tree [Quran 48:18]

4. But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove hard and fought with their wealth and their lives. Such are they for whom are the good things, and it is they who will be successful [Quran 9-88]

5. Allah has forgiven the Prophet, the Muhajirin and the Ansar who followed him in the time of distress. [Quran 9-117]

3) SOME RANDOM VIRTUES OF THE SAHAABA FROM AHADEETH

1) It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“The best of the people are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2652) and Muslim (2533).

Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu-anhu) also said
: “You  (people) fast, pray and perform more Jihaad than the companions of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam), whilst they are better than you! They (i.e. the people) said: “Why is that the case O father of Abdur-Rahmaan?” He said: They (exercised) more abstinence from the (excess and unnecessary) worldly things and were more desirous of the afterlife.”

[Quoted by Shaikh Muhammad Al-Imaam in (كسب الحلال عمل الأبطال  Page: 25). The Shaikh (may Allaah preserve him) says that it was reported by Ibn Abee Shaybah Number 35553; and Ibnul Mubaarak in Az-Zudh 501; Abu Nu`aym in Al-Hilyah 1/136; and Bayhaqi in Shu`ab Al-Eemaan 10636; and it is authentic]

The prophet (s.a.w) also said : My ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of whom will be in Hell except one group.” They said: Who are they, O Messenger of Allaah? He said: “(Those who follow) that which I and my companions follow.”

[Ref: This is mentioned in the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr which was recorded and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi (2641). It was also classed as hasan by al-‘Iraaqi in Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (3/432), al-‘Iraaqi in Takhreej al-Ihya’ (3/284) and al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.]

2) It was narrated that al-Bara’ (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

“The Ansaar: no one loves them but a believer and no one hates them but a hypocrite. Whoever loves them, Allaah will love him, and whoever hates them, Allaah will hate him.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3672; Muslim, 75.

Alee -Radi Allaahu anhu- mentions that the Messenger of Allaah ordered Ibn Mas’ood to climb up a tree to bring something down from it, and his companions looked at the shins of Abdullaah bin Mas’ood while he was climbing the tree, and they began to laugh at the thinness of his shins!  So the Messenger of Allaah said: ‘What causes you to laugh?! The leg of Abdullaah is heavier in the scales on the Day of Judgement than mount Uhud.’

[Recorded by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and authenticated by Shaykh Ahmad Shakir.(920), Taken from Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubalaa & Thahdheeb at-thahdheeb]

3) It was narrated from Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"Whoever wants to follow an example, let them follow the example of those who have passed away, for those who are living are not safe from fitnah (temptation). They are the sahabah (companions) of muhammad. They are the best of this ummah, the purest in heart, the deepest in knowledge, and the farthest from false display of piety. They are the people whom allah chose to be the companions of his prophet and to convey his religion. So acknowledge their superiority and imitate their way and behavior, for they were following the straight path."

(Ibn `Abdul-Bar, Jami` Bayan Al-`Ilm wa Fadlihi, Chapter on undesirable debate, dispute, and argument, vol. 2, p. 947, no. 1810, (verified by Al-Zuhayry); and Abu Isma`il Al-Harawy, Dham Al-Kalam wa Ahlihi, vol. 4, p. 38, no. 758, verified by `Abdullah Al-Ansary. Related by Abu Nu`aym in Al-Hilyah' from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, vol. 1, pp. 305- 306)

4) Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

Allaah looked into the hearts of His slaves, and He saw that the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the best of people’s hearts, so He chose him for Himself and sent him with His message. Then He looked into the hearts of His slaves after the heart of Muhammad, and He found that the hearts of his companions were the best of people’s hearts, so He made them the supporters of His Prophet, who fought for His religion. So whatever the Muslims think is good, is good before Allaah, and whatever they think is bad, is bad before Allaah. End quote.

Narrated by Ahmad in al-Musnad (1/379). The scholars of hadeeth said: Its isnaad is hasan.

It is reported that ‘Abdullāh b. Mas’ūd – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

The people will remain upon goodness as long as knowledge comes to them from the Companions of Allāh’s Messenger – Allāh’s praise and peace be upon him, and from their seniors. But when knowledge comes to them from their minors, that is when they will be destroyed.

Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr, Jāmi’ Bayān Al-’Ilm wa Fadlihi article 1060.

Note:

Being upon a good and right path is based on following the knowledge of the Companions and seniors: scholars and people who adhere to the Sunnah, whereas taking knowledge from minors like ignorants and heretics is a sign of destruction

5) When one of the Sahaabah sinned by telling Quraysh that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was coming with the army during the year of the Conquest, and ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab wanted to execute him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“He was present at Badr, and you do not know, perhaps Allaah looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.’”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim (2494).

Wathila ibn Asqa` (radhiallahu anhu) said : The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam) said : You will not be deprived  of Goodness (khayr)  until  those who have seen me and accompanied me [1] are present  among you . I swear by Allah you will not be deprived of goodness until those (Taba`een) who have seen those (i.e sahaaba) who have seen me and accompanied  my Sahaaba are present among you . I swear by Allah you will not be deprived of goodness until those (Atba` Taba`een) who have seen those (Taba`een)  who have seen those (i.e sahaaba)  who have seen me and accompanied those(Taba`een) who have  accompanied my sahaaba - are present among you.

[in short : as long as the sahaaba, taba`een and tab` a taba`een are present among the people,  goodness shall remain.  Narrated in Sunan ibn Abi `Aasim (2/360) ; Musnad as-Shaameen lit-Tabraanee (1/452) ; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/178); Taareekh ad-Dimishq (32/324); Saheeh]

6) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

[1] "The stars are the custodians (guardians) of the sky, so when the stars depart, there will come to the sky what is promised for it (i.e. on the Day of Judgment). I am the custodian of my Companions, so when I depart, there will come to my Companions what is promised for them (i.e. great trials and tribulations). My Companions are the custodians for my Ummah, so when my Companions depart, there will come to my Ummah what is promised for it (i.e. schisms, spread of innovations etc).’’

[Sahih Muslim 4: 1344)/ Sahîh - related by Muslim (16/82), Ahmad (4/398) and al-Baghawî in Sharh as-Sunnah (14/71-72) ]

Another similar hadeeth enlisting the virtues of the first three generation says :

Allah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said, “A time will come upon the people, when a group of people will wage a holy war and it will be said, ‘Is there amongst you anyone who has accompanied Allah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam))?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come upon the people when a group of people will wage a holy war, and it will be said, “Is there amongst you anynone who has accompanied the companions of Allah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come upon the people when a group of people will wage a holy war, and it will be said, “Is there amongst you anyone who has been in the company of the companions of the companions of Allah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ And victory will be bestowed on them.”

[Ref: Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Number: 3649]

7) Narrated `Abdullaah bin `Amr bin Al-`Aas: My father got me married to a lady of a noble family, and often used to ask my wife about me, and she used to reply, “What a wonderful man he is! He never comes to my bed, nor has he approached me since he married me.” When this state continued for a long period, my father told the story to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who said to my father, “Let me meet him.” Then I met him and he asked me,“How do you fast?” I replied, “I fast daily,” He asked, “How long does it take for you to finish the recitation of the whole Qur’aan?” I replied, “I finish it every night.” On that he صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Fast for three days every month and recite the Qur’aan (and finish it) in one month.” I said, “But I have power to do more than that.” He said, “Then fast for three days per week.” I said, “I have the power to do more than that.” He said, “Therefore, fast the most superior type of fasting, (that is, the fasting of (prophet) Dawood who used to fast every alternate day; and finish the recitation of the whole Qur’aan in seven days.” I wish I had accepted the permission of Allaah's Apostle as I have become a weak old man. It is said that `Abdullaah used to recite one-seventh of the Qur’aan during the daytime to some of his family members, for he used to check his memorization of what he would recite at night during the daytime so that it would be easier for him to read at night. And whenever he wanted to gain some strength, he used to give up fasting for some days and count those days to fast for a similar period, for he disliked to leave those things which he used to do during the lifetime of the Prophet.

[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4689)]

8) And Jaabir (r.a) said: On the day of al-Hudaibiyah, the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Today, you are the best people on Earth.” And we were 1,400 then.

[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4154), Muslim (1856)]

Concerning the participants of the treaty of Hudaybiyah Allaah said:

{ Indeed, Allaah was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bay'ah (pledge) to you (O Muhammad - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As-Sakeenah (calmness and tranquility) upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory.} [Al Fath: 18]

9) Qatadah reported:

It was asked of Ibm Umar, “Did the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, laugh?” He said, “Yes and the faith in their hearts was greater than the mountains.”

[Hilyat al-Awliya li Abu Na’eem p. 311, Hasan]

10)  Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (salallahu alaihi wasalam) said:

“This (i.e. Saad ibn Muadh) is the one at whose death the Throne shook, the gates of heaven were opened for him and seventy thousand angels attended his funeral. It squeezed* him once then released him.”

[Sahih Al-Bukhari 1/536; Sahih Muslim 2/294; Jami' At-Tirmidhi 2/225 and Sunan An-Nasai, Hadeeth No. 2057. Graded 'saheeh' by Shaikh Al-Albani in Saheeh Sunan An-Nasai, Hadeeth No. 2055]

11) It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullaah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “When Al-Khandaq (the Trench) was dug, I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the state of severe hunger. So I returned to my wife {She is Sahlah bint Mas‘ood ibn Aws Adh-Dhafriyyah Al-Ansaariyyah, may Allaah be pleased with her. [An-Nawawi; Sharh Saheeh Muslim (17/120)]} and said, “Have you got anything (to eat), for I have seen Allaah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, in a state of severe hunger.” She brought out for me, a bag containing one Saa‘ (double handful) of barley, and we had a domestic she-animal (i.e. a kid) which I slaughtered then, and my wife ground the barley and she finished at the time I finished my job (i.e. slaughtering the kid). Then I cut the meat into pieces and put it in an earthenware (cooking) pot, and returned to Allaah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him .

My wife said, “Do not disgrace me in front of Allaah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who are with him.” So I went to him and said to him secretly, “O Allaah’s Messenger! I have slaughtered a she-animal (i.e. kid) of ours, and we have ground a Saa‘ of barley which was with us. So please come, you and another person along with you.”

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his voice and said, “O people of Trench ! Jaabir has prepared a meal so let us go.” Allaah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, “Do not put down your earthenware meat pot (from the fireplace) or bake your dough till I come.”

So I came (to my house) and Allaah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, too, came, proceeding before the people. When I came to my wife, she said, “May Allaah do so-and-so to you.” I said, “I have told the Prophet of what you said.” Then she brought out to him (i.e. the Prophet the dough, and he spat in it and invoked for Allaah's Blessings in it. Then he proceeded towards our earthenware meat-pot and spat in it and invoked for Allaah's Blessings in it.

Then he said (to my wife). Call a lady-baker to bake along with you and keep on taking out scoops from your earthenware meat-pot, and do not put it down from its fireplace.” They were one-thousand (who took their meals), and by Allaah they all ate, and when they left the food and went away, our earthenware pot was still bubbling (full of meat) as if it had not decreased, and our dough was still being baked as if nothing had been taken from it.

[Ref: Reported in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari no. (4101 and 4102) and Saheeh Muslim no. (5436)]

12) A man came to the Prophet. The Prophet (s.a.w) sent a messenger to his wives (to bring something for that man to eat) but they said that they had nothing except water. Then Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) said, "Who will take this (person) or entertain him as a guest?" An Ansar man said, "I." So he took him to his wife and said to her, "Entertain generously the guest of Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) " She said, "We have got nothing except the meals of my children." He said, "Prepare your meal, light your lamp and let your children sleep if they ask for supper." So she prepared her meal, lighted her lamp and made her children sleep, and then stood up pretending to mend her lamp, but she put it off. Then both of them pretended to be eating, but they really went to bed hungry. In the morning the Ansari went to Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) who said, "Tonight Allah laughed or wondered at your action." Then Allah revealed: "But give them (emigrants) preference over themselves even though they were in need of that And whosoever is saved from the covetousness Such are they who will be successful." (59.9)

[Saheeh Bukhaari, Vol. 5, Book 58, Hadith 142]

13)
'Abdullaah ibn'Amr that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said,"Do you know who will be the first of my ummah to enter Paradise?"I said,"Allah and His Messenger know best". He said,"The Muhajireen. They will come to the gate of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection and ask for it to be opened. The gatekeepers will say to them,"Have you been brought to account?"They will say,"What do we need to be brought to account for? We were carrying our swords and fighting for the sake of Allah until we died."Then the gates will be opened for them and they will stay there for forty years ( & in some ahadeeth 500 years) before anyone else enters". [Mustadarak Hadith#2324]

[Silsilah al-Hadith as-Saheehah, 2/532, no. 853]

14)

Anas ibn Malik (r.a) said : You people do things today that you regard as less significant than a strand of hair, whereas we during the time of the prophet (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam) used to consider them destructive sins

[Ref: Saheeh al-Bukhaari , Book 76, Hadeeth 499, under the chapter titled : Sins that are seen as insignificant but it should be kept away from ]

Sa’īd b. Jubayr – Allāh have mercy on him – reports that a man once asked Ibn ‘Abbās – Allāh be pleased with them:

“How many kabā`ir (major, deadly sins) are there? Seven?” He replied, “They are closer to seven hundred than seven; except a major sin does not remain so if one (truly) seeks forgiveness [from Allāh], and a lesser sin does not remain so if one insists on continuously doing it (i.e. it becomes a major sin).”

[Ref: Al-Tabarī, Al-Tafsīr article 9207, et al.]

15) Their superiority in knowledge

Abu Khaithama narrated to us, saying: Wakee' reported to us, saying: 'Ikrimah Ibn 'Amaar reported from Yahyaa Ibn Abee Katheer on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) that he said: “Take hold of knowledge by writing and taking notes. Who will buy knowledge from me for a dirham?”

[Ref: Kitaab al-`Ilm Abu Khaithama an-Nasa`ee (148)]

 `Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (r.a) would say:

أخبرنا أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الباقي أنا أبو محمد الجوهري أنا أبو عمر بن حيوية أنا أحمد بن معروف أنا الحسين بن الفهم نا محمد بن سعد أنا الفضل بن دكين نا أبو سعيد بن عوذ البراد المكي نا محمد بن المرتفع قال سمعت ابن الزبير يقول يا معشر الحاج سلوني فعلينا كان التنزيل ونحن حضرنا التأويل

... Muhammad bin al-Murtafi` said: I heard ibn al-Zubayr say: "Oh people of pilgrimage, ask me for the revelation descended on us and we witnessed the interpretation.

[Ref: Tareekh Dimashq 28/168.]

It is narrated on the authority `Abdullaah Ibn Mas`ood that the Messenger of Allaah sallahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

1) There was never a Prophet sent before me by Allaah to his people but he had, among his people, (his) disciples and companions, who followed his ways and obeyed his command.

2) Then there came after them their successors who said whatever they did not practice, and practiced whatever they were not commanded to do......

[Saheeh Muslim (81, 82)]

This shows that the prophet praised the very first generation i.e. his sahaba ; for they were far from innovations.

4) THEIR VIRTUES MENTIONED IN DIFFERENT BOOKS OF AHADEETH : CHAPTER WISE

There are numerous books of ahadeeth, the compilers of which have dedicated a whole chapter trying to collect ahadeeth about the virtues of the companions. Since we don't have all the books translated in English yet, so I'd give only a few links (please click on them to access them):

(i) Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions : Sahih Bukhaari

(ii) Companions of the Prophet : Sahih Bukhaari

6) THE SAHAABA'S LOVE FOR THE PROPHET (S.A.W) - WHO AMONG US CAN BE LIKE THEM?

7) THE VIRTUES OF THE SAHAABAS - FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE MUHADDITHS

9) THE CURSE ON THE ONE WHO ABUSES OR REVILES THE SAHAABAS

Those who find faults or curse these sahaabas, they forget that the very Qur'an, hadeeth and Islaam they are upon (if they are i.e) is taught and inherited from the sahaabas. Yet there are some who abuse them with most fahaasha of abuses

7) It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

Do not abuse my companions, for by him in whose hands my life is, if anyone of you spends gold equal to uhud (in allah's cause) it would not be equal to a mud (a dry measure of half bushel, 543 grams) or even a half mud spent by one of them.

(Al-Bukhari, Book on merits and virtues, no. 3673; Muslim, Book on merits of the Companions, no. 2540, 2541; Al-Tirmidhy, Book on merits, no. 3861; Abu Dawud, Book on Al-Sunnah, no. 4658; Ibn Majah, Introduction, no. 161; and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Musnad, vol. 3, p. 11.)

8) .......This is why `Aaishah رضي الله عنها explained to `Urwah bin al-Zubair the condition of some of those who deserted them and thus were forsaken:

“O son of my sister! The Muslims were commanded to seek forgiveness for the Companions of Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم but they reviled him.”

[Saheeh Muslim]

9) Allah's Messenger said,

“May the La'nah of Allah, His Angels and the whole of mankind be upon him, who slanders my companions.”

[Al Saheeha]

10) Imam Tabaranee has reported from Aa'isha (radhi allahu anha) that Prophet said,

“Do not slandermy companions. May the La'nah of Allah be upon him, who slanders my companions.” [Saheeh Jami'a as-Sagheer]

Tabarani narrated in "Dua" (darul kutub al-ilmiyah, 1413) from Anas ibn Malik:

2108 - حدثنا يوسف بن يعقوب بن إسماعيل الأصم البغدادي ثنا رزيق بن السخت ثنا علي بن يزيد الصدائي ثنا ابو شيبة عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه عن رسول الله قال من سب أصحابي فعليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين لا يقبل الله منه صرفا ولا عدل

"Whoever abuses my Companions, upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people, may Allah don't accept from sarfa and adla".

Same hadith transmitted in "Fadhail ashab" by Abdullah ibn Ahmad (muasasat risala, 1403):

8 - حدثنا عبد الله قثنا عبد الله بن عون قثنا على بن يزيد الصدائي قال حدثني أبو شيبة الجوهري عن أنس بن مالك قال قال أناس من أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : يا رسول الله أنا نسب فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من سب أصحابي فعليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين لا يقبل الله منه صرفا ولا عدلا

Hamza ibn Yusuf al-Jurjani narrated in "Tareeh al-jurjan" (alamul kitab, 1401) same from Anas:

Albani said in "Silsila as saheeha" (#2340) said it's authentic without ending (may Allah not accept from him).

al-Heythami in "Majmau zawaid" (#16429) from Aisha:

لا تسبوا أصحابي لعن الله من سب أصحابي
رواه الطبراني في الأوسط ورجاله رجال الصحيح غير علي بن سهل وهو ثقة

"Don't abuse my companions, may curse of Allah be upon the one who abuses my companions".

(Al-Heythami said) "Narrated Tabarani in al-Awsat, narrators are narrators of saheeh, except Ali ibn Sakhl, and he's thiqat".

Ibn Abu Aseem narrated in "Sunnan" from Ata:

ثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة ثنا أبو معاوية عن محمد بن خالد عن عطاء قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
من سب أصحابي فعليه لعنة الله

"Curse of Allah upon those who abuses my companions"

And same from Ata was narrated in "Musannaf":

32419 - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن محمد بن خالد عن عطاء قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من سب أصحابي فعليه لعنة الله

Narration seems mursal. Albani in "Zilalul jannah" (#1001) said it's hasan.

The above paraphrase is taken from brother Effendi

11) Abdullah ibn Mughaffal [May Allah be pleased with him] narrates that the Messenger of Allah said:

الله الله في أصحابي ، لا تتخذوهم غرضا بعدي ، فمن أحبهم فبحبي أحبهم ، ومن أبغضهم فبغضي أبغضهم ، ومن آذاهم فقد آذاني ، ومن آذاني فقد آذى الله ، ومن آذى الله يوشك أن يأخذه

“Allah, Allah! Fear Him with regard to my Companions! Allah, Allah! Fear Him with regard to my Companions! Do not make them targets after me. Whoever loves them loves them with his love for me; and whoever hates them hates them with his hatred for me. Whoever bears enmity for them bears enmity for me; and whoever bears enmity for me, bears enmity for Allah. Whoever bears enmity for Allah is about to be seized”

[Ahmad (20152), Al-Tirmidhi (4029), Al-Rawyaani (882), and Al-Tirmidhi said: a Hasan Gharib tradition, classified as weak].

11 a) Hasheem narrated on the authority of Abi Muslim, on the authority of Mus`ab bin Sa`d that a man was insulting `Alee. Sa`d Ibn Abi Waqqas (r.a) forbade him from doing so, but the man did not stop. So Sa`d invoked Allaah against him. Soon afterwards, a camel came and crushed the man till he died.

This incident has been narrated through many routes. It was reported by Ibn Abi al_Dunyaa in “Mujaabee al-Da`wah” (The one whose prayers are accepted). And similarly it was reported by al-Zubair bin Bakaar, as well as by Abu Kurayb.

And Ibn Jad`aan reported on the authority of Ibn al-Musayyib that a man was insulting `Alee, Talhah and al-Zubair. Sa`d forbade him and said: “Do not speak bad against by brothers.” But the man refused. So Sa`d stood and prayed 2 Raka`aat and supplicated (against the man). A camel came in the midst of the people (in search for the man). Then It attacked the man, and started kicking him till he died. And I (Ibn al-Musayyib) saw people following Sa`d saying to him: “Glad tidings to you O Abu Is-haaq! Your supplication has been asnwered.”

11 b) Rayaah ibn al-Harith said: I was sitting with someone (in the narration of Ahmad, it was mentioned that he was Mugheerah bin Shu`aib) in the Masjid of Koofah while the people of Koofah were with him. Then Sa`eed ibn Zayd ibn `Amr ibn Nufayl came and he (Mugheerah) welcomed him, greeted him, and seated him near his foot on the throne. Then a man of the inhabitants of Koofah, called Qays ibn `Alqamah, came. He (Mugheerah) received him and (the man) began to abuse him. Sa`eed asked: Whom is this man abusing? He replied: He is cursing `Alee. He said: Don't I see that the companions of the Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم are being abused, but you (Mugheerah) neither stop it nor do anything about it? I heard the Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say--and I need not say for him anything which he did not say, and then he would ask me tomorrow when I see him –“Abu Bakr will go to Paradise and `Umar will go to Paradise `Uthmaan will go to Paradise, `Alee will go to Paradise, Talhah will go to Paradise, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam will go to Paradise, Sa`d ibn Maalik will go to Paradise, and `Abdul Rahmaan ibn `Awf will go to Paradise.” If I wish, I can mention the tenth. The People asked: Who is he? So he kept silence. The again asked: Who is he: He replied: He is Sa`eed ibn Zayd.  He then said: The company of one of the man whose face has been covered with dust while in the companionship of the Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم is better than the actions of one of you for a whole life time even if he is granted the life-span of Noah (approx 950 years).

10) THE FATAAWA OF SOME SCHOLARS AND SALAAF REGARDING THE STATUS OF THE SAHAABAS AND UPON THOSE WHO REVILE THEM

12) Imam Al-Shafi'y (may Allah be merciful to him) wrote in his book Al-Risalah:

"The sahabah are superior to us in all knowledge, intelligence, faith, virtue, and every means through which knowledge or guidance is attained. Indeed, their opinion is more beneficial to us than our own is to us."

(Al-Fatawa; vol. 4, pp. 157-158)

13) Haafidh `Abul Qaasim ibn `Asaakir has documented in Tareekh Dimashq that Imaam al-Nasaa’i was asked about Mu`aawiyah Ibn Abi Sufyaan His reply was:

“Islaam is like a house with a door. The door of Islaam is the Sahaabah. Whoever speaks ill of the Sahaabah seeks but to harm Islaam, just like one who knocks on a door to enter a house. As for Mu`aawiyah, whoever speaks ill of him seeks to find a way to speak ill of the Sahaabah.”

 [Tahdheeb al-Kamaal, vol. 1 p. 338-339]

Abu Zur`ah al-Razee said: “If you see a man seeking to belittle anyone amongst the Companions of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, then know that he is a Zindeeq (heretic). This is because according to us the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم is true and the Qur’aan is true. And the only ones who brought this Qur’aan and the Sunan to us are the Companions of Allaah’s Messenger. They only wish to disparage and demolish our witnesses so that they can nullify the Book and the Sunnah, whereas they are more deserving of being disparaged for they are the Zanaadiqah (heretics).”

[Taareekh Baghdaad (38/132), Al-Kifayah by Al-Khatib p. 49 and Al-Kifaya fil- 'Ilm Ar-Rivaaya", p: 97]

15) Al-Humaidi said :

“… praying for Mercy (Tarahum) for all the companions of [Prophet] Muhammad (Peace be Upon him), since Allah the Exalted said: (And those who came after them say: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith) (Al-Hashr 59:10), so we were ordered to Pray for their forgiveness, so whoever insults them or degrades all of them or one of them, then he is not upon the Sunnah, and has no right in the fay’. That was narrated to us through more than one route to Malik ibn Anas”

[Usul Al-Sunnah p. 43].

16) Al-Tahaawi said:

“We love the Companions of the Prophet (Peace be upon him). Nonetheless we do not go to extremes in the love of anyone of them, nor do we forsake anyone of them. But we hate him who hates them, and talks of them in an unseemly manner. As for us, we do not mention them but in good terms. Their love is religion, faith, and excellence. And their hatred is disbelief, hypocrisy and rebellion”

[Al-Tahawiyah p. 689].

17) Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal said:

“It is not permissible for anyone to mention any of their(companions) bad qualities or to criticize any of them for a fault or shortcoming. Whoever does that should be disciplined by the ruler, who does not have the option of pardoning him; rather he should discipline him and ask him to repent. If he repents it would be accepted from him. However, if he remains persistent, the punishment should be repeated, and he should remain in prison until he dies or recants” [Majmou' Al-Fatawa 3/1057].

Imam Ahmad is also reported to have said "If you see someone mentioning the sahaaba with foul language, then you should reconsider your opinion about him being a Muslim
[Saarim al-Maslool]

Ibn Haani (rahimahullah) reports that Imam Ahmad was asked about a man who abuses Mu`awiyah (r.a) so is praying behind him is permissible? Imam Ahmad replied " No, Do not pray behind him and he has no respect "

[Ref: Sawalaat Ibn Haani 296]

Ibrahim al-Harbiy said i heard a man ask Abu `Abdullah (Ahmad ibn Hambal) : Oh aba abdillah my khalu (uncle) criticises and taunts mu`awiyah (r.a) and i at times eat with him so Ahmad ibn Hanbal immediately said : Do not eat with him

18) Imam Al Nawaawi says :

Slandering the Sahaabah is Haraam and amongst major sins, regardless of whether they were entangled by disputes or were safe from them, because their participation in the battles was due to their Ijtihaad [Sharh an-Nawawi]

19) Shaikhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) mentions after citing a few Ahadeeth that :

“He, who slanders the Sahabah , has committed a greater crime than harboring hatred for them. Such a person would surely be a hypocrite, who does not believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment.” [Saarim al-Maslool]

"From Abu Bakr al Marwazee: "I asked Abu Abdullah (Imam Ahmad) about (someone who) abused Abu Bakr, Umar, 'Aaisha?. He replied: "I don't see him upon islam".

"From Muhammad ibn Yusuf al Firyabee: "I heard a man asked Sufyan (al- Thawree) about (a person who ) abused Abu Bakr and Umar. He replied: "(He is a ) Disbeliever in the Great/Majestic Allah".[ Zahabi "Siyar alamoon nubala" 7/253

"From Moosa ibn Kharoon: "I heard a person asking Firyabee (Muhammad ibn Yusoof) about (a person) who insulted Abu Bakr and Umar. (Firyabee) replied: (he is a ) "Kaafir". Then the person asked: "Should we pray over him (his body)?". (Firyabee) replied: "No". (then the) Man asked: "What should we do (then)? He use to say "la ilaha ila llah". Firyabee replied: "Don't touch him with hands, take two sticks and push him into the grave"["Sunan" Khallal 1/499; "Ibanatul Suğra" s 160]

(Yahya ibn Ma'een said): "Whoever will abuse Usman (r.a) or Talha (r.a) or any other companion of prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) is (a) dajjal, and he is not (to) be recorded (narrated) from. Upon him is the curse of Allah, angles and every human". Tahtheeb at tahtheeb" by Ibn Hajar vol1, #948.]

Imam Al Awza'ee said : Whoever will abuse Abu Bakr, apostated from his religion, and his blood is permitted". ["Sharh al Ibanatool Sugra" by ibn Batta]

"Knowledge is what comes from the Companions of Muhammad (saws) and that which does not come from a single one of them is not knowledge".  [Jaami 'Bayaanil - 'Ilm of Ibn
'Abdul Barr (2/36)]

Abu Sayeed Abdal Kareem ibn Mohammad ibn Mansoor At-Tameeme As-Samanee (d 562 h) said: "And nation is agreed upon takfeer of imamiya. Because they believe that companions been deluded, and they use to reject agreed opinion (of companions) and they attribute to (companions) things which doesn't suit to them". [ Samanee "Ansaab" 6/341.]

Abu Mansoor Abdal Kaheer ibn Tahhar ibn Muhammad Bagdadee, At-Tamemee Al-Isfarayenee (d 429 h) said: "Regarding people of desire like Jaroodiya, Khashamiya, Jahmeya, and Imamiya, which use to make takfeer upon the best from companions, (we can say) that they are disbelievers in our view. It's not permitted to pray upon them in our view, and neither permitted to pray behind them". [ Bagdadee "Al Fark beyna firak" p 357. (Quoted from book by Naseer al Qifaree)]

Sheikh Ali ibn Sultan ibn Muhammad, better known like Al-Karee Hanafe (d 1014 h)said: "Whoever will abuse a single person from companions is a Faasiq and an innovator, in accordance to an agreed upon opinion. But if he were to understand/think like the shia'as and their companions that such an act (of reviling, abusing, etc the companions) is permissible or if he were to expect a reward for this act, like they always use to talk about. Or (if) he would think that companions and Ahlus Sunnah (the sunnis or people of the sunnah) are kuffaar, then such person is disbeliever in accordance to an agreed upon opinion" ["Shammool awraad fi zamm al rafd" pages 252,254.]

Bishr ibn Hareeth ibn AbduRahman ibn Ata said: "The one who curse companions of prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa ala alaihi wa salam) is kaafir, even if he pray, fast and say that he's Muslim".[Sharh ibn Batta.]

29) Saad bin Abi Waqas (may Allah be pleased with him) one day heard a man grumpling; when he listened closely to what he was saying he realized he was abusing Ali, Talhah and Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them). He told him to stop, but he would not listen and continued. Finally, Saad bin Abi Waqas (may Allah be pleased with him) lost his temper, and said if he did not control his tongue he would put a curse on him. Arrogantly the man told him that he was arrogating powers to himself and he asked him if he thought he was a Prophet..

Listening to the man's bitter words, he merely turned away. He went, made his ablutions for prayer and offered two supererogatory units of prayer. Then he entreated Allah Almighty:

"Oh Allah you know that this man is abusing men of purity, with whom You Yourself are Pleased because of their goodness. Surely You will not approve of theses abuses. May this man be a lesson for such other men."

He had barely done with his supplications when people saw that a raging she-camel had broken away from the rope which tethered her, and leaving her home had entered in the midst of a crowd of people. It seemed as if she was looking for a particular person. In seconds she had the head of a person in her bloodthirsty jaws and was shaking it violently from side to side. Finally his neck broke and in no time he had become the prey of death. People were stunned in silence. The dead man was non other than the one who had been abusing the noble companion a few minutes earlier, and against whom Saad bin Abi Waqas (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared. He had indeed become a lesson for people.

30) The Khaleefah `Umar Ibn `Abdul-`Azeez رحمه الله in defense of Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه:

Ibraaheem Ibn Maisarah said: It reached me that `Umar Ibn `Abdul-`Azeez in his reign did not flog anyone except for a person who had cursed Mu`aawiyah in his presence. So he had him flogged thrice. [al-Istee`aab (1/631)]

31) Al-Hasan al-Basree about Mu`aawiyah

It was said to al-Hasan رحمه الله: O Abu Sa`eed! Verily there are people here who bear witness that Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه is from the people of Fire. He replied: “Allaah’s curse be on them! How do they know who is in the fire?” [al-Istee`aab (1/631)]

Imam Hasan al-Basri was asked that some people abuse and curse Mu`awiyah and `Abdullah ibn Zubayr radhiallahu `anhum so Hasan (r.h) replied "

Whoever curses them, upon him is the curse of Allah

[Ref: Tareekh of Ibn `Asaakir 59/206]

32) Al-Fudhail Ibn `Iyyaadh about Mu`aawiyah

Al-Fudhail Ibn `Iyyaadh رحمه الله used to pray for mercy for Mu`aawiyah رضي الله عنه and use to say: “He was one of the scholars from the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.” [Al-Sunnah of al-Khallaal (2/438)]

It is reported that Bishr b. Al-Hârith said:

I heard Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd say, “It has reached me that Allâh has barred repentance from every adherent of bid’ah (religious innovation), and the worst of the people of bid’ah are those who hate the Companions of Allâh’s Messenger – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him.” He then turned to me and said, “Make the firmest of your deeds with Allâh your love for the Companions of His Prophet, for [then], were you to come to the standing of judgment (on the Day of Resurrection) with the likes of the Earth in sins, Allâh would forgive you; but if you come [on that Day] with even the smallest amount of hatred for them, no [good] deed will benefit you.”

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-‘Ilm 5: 412.

32) Al-Ma`aafa bin `Imraan** about Mu`aawiyah

A man asked al-Ma`aafa bin `Imraan: “O Abu Mas`ood! How is `Umar Ibn `Abdul-`Azeez in comparison to Mu`aawiyah Ibn Abu Sufyaan?” Because of this al-Ma`aaf got extremely angry and said: “There is no one comparable with the Companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Mu`aawiyah accompanied (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم), was his brother in-law, was his Kaatib (scribe) and his trustworthy over the Wahee (revelations) of Allaah.” [Tareekh Baghdaad (1/209)]]

Al-Ma`aafa was also asked: Is Mu`aawiyah better or `Umar bin `Abdul-`Azeez? He replied: “Mu`aawiyah is six hundred times better than the likes of `Umar bin `Abdul-`Azeez.” [Al-Sunnah of al-Khallaal (2/433/664)]

** Imaam al-Dhahabee رحمه الله said: He is al-Ma`aafa bin `Imraan bin Nafeel bin Jaaber, the Imaam, Shaikh al-Islaam, jewel amongt the scholars, Abu Mas`ood al-Azdee.

Imam as-Sufyaan al-Thawree said: al-Ma`aafa was a jewel amongt the scholars.

Imam al-Wakee` said: He was reliable (narrator).

Ibn al-Mubaarak would say: The righteous person narrated to me, referring to al-Ma`aafa. [Siyar A`laam al-Nubalaa’]

Abdullaah bin Al Mubaarak was asked about Mu’aawiyyah :

May Allaah be Pleased with him and he said: “What can I say about a man who the Messenger of Allaah -May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him - said:

“Allaah hears those who praise Him, so he (Muawiyyah) said after him: Our Lord, to You is the Praise.” So it was said to him (Ibn Mubarak), “Who is better? Him or ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez?” He said: “ The dust in the nosetrils Of Mu’aawiyyah was with the Messenger of Allaah –May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him- is better and more virtuous that ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez.” Reported in Taareekh Dimashq (59/207) and Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah (8/148)

33) Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal -rahimahu-llaah- on Mu`aawiyah

Abu Bakr al-Maroodhee said: I said to Abu `Abdullaah (Imaam Ahmad رحمه الله): “Who is better, Mu`aawiyah or `Umar Ibn `Abdul-`Azeez?” He said: “Mu`aawiyah is better, for we do not compare anyone with the Companions of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The best generation is mine.”” [Al-Sunnah of al-Khallaal (2/432/660)]

34) Ibn `Umar –radhee Allaahu `anhu- said:

“Do not revile the Companions of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), for the stay of anyone of them for a brief period (with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) is better than all the good deeds that anyone of you does in his lifetime.”

[Sunan Ibn Maajah (162) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Sharh al-Tahaaweeyah and also graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh Wasee-Ullaah `Abbaas in Fadhaail al-Sahaabah (15)]

35) It is reported that Ayyûb Al-Sakhtiyânî – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Whoever loves Abû Bakr has upheld the religion, whoever loves ‘Umar has made the way clear, whoever loves ‘Uthmân is enlightened by the light of Allâh, and whoever loves ‘Alî has taken the firmest handhold. Whoever speaks well of the Companions of Allâh’s Messenger – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – is clear of hypocrisy (nifâq), but whoever belittles any one of them or dislikes [any one of them] for something he did, then he is a heretic (mubtadi’), an opponent of the Sunnah and the Righteous Predecessors (the Salaf), and it is feared that none of his deeds will be raised to the heavens until he loves all of [the Companions] and his heart is clear towards them.

[Ibn Abî Zamanîn, Usûl Al-Sunnah article 189.]

36) The advice of Imam Malik bin Anas -Rahimullaah- was:

'The Salaf used to teach their children love for Abu Bakr and Umar just like they would teach a Soorah of the Qur'aan.'

[From: ‘Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahl-Ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah’ – al-Laala’ka’ee (d. 418 A.H.) No. 2325]

Abu `Urwa al-Zubayri narrated: We were with Malik ibn Anas when they mentioned a certain man who would find fault with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah. When he heard this, Malik recited the verse: "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him. . ." until he reached the words "delighting the sowers - that He may enrage the disbelievers with (the sight of) them." (48:29) Then Malik said: "Whoever among the people has become one who harbors spite towards any one of the Prophet's Companions, this verse has targeted and reached him." al-Khatib mentioned it [al-Qurtubi in his Jami` li ahkam al-qur'an (1994 Cairo ed. 16:283-286)]

37) From Hamad bin Salamah who said: I heard Ayyoob saying:

‘Whoever loved Abu Bakr then he has indeed established his Deen, and whoever has loved Umar then he has indeed made the path clear, and whoever loved Uthmaan then he has indeed become enlightened with the light of Allaah and whoever loved Alee then he has held on to a firm handhold which will not break.’

Hamad said: I asked Ayyoob:

‘Should we memorise this?’

He answered: ‘Yes, memorise it, teach it to your children, and your children should teach it to their children.’

[From: ‘Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahl-Ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah’ – al-Laala’ka’ee (d. 418 A.H.) No. 2333, & Tareekh Dimishq 41/333]

38)  – From Jafar bin Muhammad bin Alee who said my father said to me:

‘O my son, indeed cursing Abu Bakr and Umar is from the major sins, so do not pray behind the person who curses them.’

[From: Tareekh Baghdad 9/437 & Tareekh Dimishq 57/224]

39) Badruddin az-Zarkashi said:

After Quran clearly stated her purity, the one who accuse her becoming kaafir. The Hawarezmi (568/1172) from scholars of our school in his book “al-Kafi”, chapter on apostasy says: “If anyone would accuse Aisha in adultery he becomes kaafir. Because Quran revealed her purity. Stance of other women isn’t like this”.

Imam Malik (179/795) said: “The one who would abuse her should be killed”. Abul Hattab ibn Dihye (633/1235) in “Ajwibatul masail” says: “The book of Allah testifies this view of imaam Malik. Because when Allah mentioned in the Quran that mushrikeen attributed a child to Him, He praised Himself and  He said: “(21:26) And they say: The Beneficent Allah has taken to Himself a ! son. Glory be to Him”. And when He mentioned Aisha, He said: “(24:16) And why did you not, when you heard it, say: It does not befit us that we should talk of it (the false gossip against `Aisha) ; glory be to Thee! this is a great calumny?” So you see the similarity? How He praised (tanzih) Himself when the musrikeen attributed something that was false (i.e a child) to him , similarly when he (s.w.t) praised `Aisha or defended `Aisha he again praised himself by saying in both the different situations “Glory be to Thee”  , . This was mentioned by Qadi Abu Bakr ibnut-Tayiib

Whoever would reject that her father Abu Bakr wa sahabi, becomes kaafir. This was mentioned by imam Shafi (204/819).

[Abu Abdullah Badruddin az-Zarkashi (d 794) “Al-Ijaba li iradi mastadrakahu Aisha alas sahaba” p 146]

40) Imam awwaam bin hawshab ash shaybani says :

Mention the good qualities (and achievements) of the Prophet's companions so the people are filled with their love and do not pin point or highlight their flaws lest people develop hatred against them

41)

Imaam Al-Bayhaqi rahimahullah (D. 458) said after mentioning the ayaat and ahadeeth affirming the Love of all Sahaabah and that it is a part of Eemaan:

“And when it has become clear that the love of Sahaabah is the part of Eemaan then (it is incumbent to know that) their love is to believe in their fadhaa’il (virtues) and acknowledging them for it, and to give everyone his rights, and for each of them possessing virtue has his value in Islaam, and for every possessor of status has his position near the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam). And (it is the requisite of their love that) their good characteristics are spread and only the good is sought for them (in Du’aa), and that which was brought to the doors of the deen from them is followed and whatever faults and slips (may have occurred from them in History) are not to be followed, nor should any of them be given precedence from one’s own self, and one should remain silent without any need to get involved into what mutual fights and disagreements occurred between them.”

[Shu’b al-Eemaan by Al-Bayhaqi (3/93); Translated by Ibn abi raza]

11) The Statements of the Scholars Regarding the Reality of the Disbelief (kufr or takfeer) of Rawafidah (shi`a)

Statements 1 to 20 are Compiled by Abu Abdurahman Makki Translated by Abbas Abu Yahya

1 - al-Imam ‘Aamir ash-Sha’abee (d. 105 A.H.) - rahimullaah - said:

‘I warn you against misguided desires, and the most evil of them are the Rafidah. That is because from them there are Jews who immerse themselves into Islaam to try to prepare it to enter their misguidance just like when Paul the son of the King of the Jews immersed himself into Christianity in order to enter their misguidance into it.’

Then ash-Sha’abee said: ‘The Rawafid did not enter into Islaam out of desire or from awe of Allaah but rather out of hatred for the people of Islaam.’[1]

2 - Talha bin Mussarraf (d. 112 A.H.) -rahimullaah - said:
‘Regarding the Rafidah, their women are not to be married nor is the meat from the animal they slaughter to be eaten because they are apostates.’[2]

3 - Abu Hanifa (d. 150 A.H.) -rahimullaah - said:
‘The Jammah is to prefer Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali and Uthmaan, and they do not belittle or find anyone deficient from amongst the companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’[3]

4 - The Imam of Dar-al-Hijra Malik bin Anas al-Asbahi (d. 179 A.H.) -rahimullaah - said:
‘Whoever curses the companions of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- then he has no part, [or he said: no share] in islaam.’[4]

5 - Al-Lalka’ee narrated that Imam Malik said:
‘Whoever curses the companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- then he has no reward.
(a) Allaah - Azza wa Jal - says:
لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانًا

<<(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking Bounties from Allah and to please Him.>>[5]; the Ayaah.

These were the companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- who migrated with him.

(b) Then Allaah said:
والذين تبؤوا الدار والإيمان

<<And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them>>[6] the Ayaah.

These were the Ansaar.

Then Allaah said: <<And those who came after them say: ‘Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith>>[7]

So the reward is for these three types, but whoever curses the companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- then he is not from these three and he has no truthful right to be amongst these three.’[8]

6 - Al-Qadi Abu Yusuf -rahimullaah - (d.182 A.H.) said:
‘I do not pray behind a Jahmi, nor a Rafidi, nor a Qadri.’[9]

7 - AbdurRahman bin Mahdi -rahimullaah - (d. 198 A.H.) said:
‘They are two nations: al-Jahmeeyah and Rafidah.’ (Meaning not from the Muslim Ummah)’[10]

8 - Imam Shaafi’ee -rahimullaah - (d. 204 A.H.) said:
‘A Rafidi has no intercession, this is only for a Muslim.’[11]

9 - Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Faryaabi - rahimullaah- (d. 212 A.H.) said:
‘I hold the opinion that the Rafidah and the Jahmeeyah are nothing but heretics (unbelievers).’[12]

10 - Ahmad bin Yunus - rahimullaah - (d. 227 A.H.) said:
‘Indeed we do not eat the meat of the animal slaughtered by a Rafidi, because to me he is an apostate.’[13]

11 - Ahmad bin Yunus also said:
‘If a Jew slaughtered a sheep and a Rafidi slaughtered one as well, then I would eat from the meat slaughtered by the Jew, and I would not eat from the meat slaughtered by the Rafidi because he has apostated from Islaam.’
Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal said to a person about Ahmad bin Yunus: ‘Go to Ahmad bin Yunus since indeed he is Shaykh ul-Islaam.’[14]

12 - Imam as-Sunnah Ahmad bin Hanbal - rahimullaah - (d. 241 A.H.) was asked by his son Abdullaah bin Ahmad:
‘I asked my father about a person who curses a person from the companions of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, so he said:  ‘I hold the view that he is not upon Islaam.’[15]

13 - From Abu Bakr al-Marwathi who said: I asked abu Abdullaah about the person who curses Abu Bakr, Umar and Aeysha?
He replied: ‘I hold the view that they are not upon Islaam.’[16]

14 - From Abu Bakr al-Marwathi who said: I heard abu Abdullaah saying that Malik said:
‘Whoever curses the Companions of the Prophet - sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam - then he has no share, or he said: no share in Islaam.’
Al-Khalaal said: AbdulMalik bin AbdulHameed informed me, who said, I heard Abu Abdullaah saying:

‘Whoever cursed [the Companions] I fear disbelief upon him, like that of the Rawafid.’
Then he said:
‘Whoever cursed the Companions of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- then we do not find any security for him that he has indeed exited from the Deen.’[17]

15 - Al-Khalaal said: Abdullaah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal said: ‘I asked my father about a person who curses a man from the companions of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, so he said:

‘I do not hold him to be upon Islaam.’[18]

16 - Imam Ahmad also said about the Rafidah:

‘They free themselves from the Companions of Muhammad -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- they curse them, belittle them and they make Takfeer (excommunication) of their leaders except four of them: Ali, Amaar, al-Miqdad and Sulayman, and the Rafidah have nothing to do with Islaam.’[19]

17 - Imam al-Bukhari -rahimullaah - (d. 256 A.H.) said:

‘I do not care if I prayed behind a Jahmi and a Rafidi, or prayed behind a Jew and a Christian, and they are not given Salam, nor are they visited, or married into, nor is their testimony accepted and their slaughtered animals are not eaten.’[20]

18 - Abu Zura’a ar-Raazi (d. 264 A.H.) -rahimullaah- said: -

‘If you see a man belittling any one from the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam; then know that he is a Zindeeq, and that is because to us the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- is upon the truth, and the Qur’aan is true.  Indeed the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- conveyed to us the Qur’aan and the Sunnan, indeed they want to criticise our witnesses so that they can invalidate the Book and the Sunnah, and these (critics) are foremost to be criticised and they are Zanadiqa (heretics).’[21]

19 - Al-Lalka’ee narrated by way of AbduRahman bin Abi Hatim, that he asked his father and Abu Zura’a about the Madhab of the Sunnah and their beliefs which the people of knowledge found them upon in every country , and what was mentioned from what they said is:

‘And indeed the Jahmeeyah are Kuffar, and indeed the Rafidah, rejected Islaam.’[22]

20 - Abdullaah Ibn Qutayba ad-Daynoori al-Baghdadi (d. 276 A.H.) said:
‘As for the extremism of the Rafidah in love for Ali which they exemplify in placing him in front of those whom the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and his Companions placed.

Their claim is that Ali had a partnership with the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- in his Prophet hood, and they also claim that the Rafidah Imams have knowledge of the unseen of when someone will give birth and similar false statements, and secret matters.
These matters are gathered in that they are lies, kufr, extreme ignorance and stupidity.’[23]

24] Badruddin az-Zarkashi said:

25] The eminent scholar, al-‘Allammah ‘Abdul-Aziz bin ’Abdellah ar-Rajihi - May Allah protect him - was asked the following question:

ما حكم عوام الروافض هل هم كفار؟ حيث إنهم يتبعون علماءهم ويعتقدون أنهم على صواب

What is the ruling concerning the Layman of the Raafidah, Are they Disbelievers? Where they follow their scholars and think they are correct.

Answer: The Scholars have said: They are disbelievers And Allah تعالى made the followers the same as those they are following (i.e. He didn’t differeiate between them): He تعالى said:

And they will say: “Our Lord! Verily, we obeyed our chiefs and our great ones, and they misled us from the (Right) Way. Our Lord! give them double torment… [Surah: 33, Ayah: 67-68]

He,  تعالى said:

When those who were followed, disown (declare themselves innocent of) those who followed (them)… [Surah: 2, Ayah: 166]

Then He  تعالى said:

Thus Allâh will show them their deeds as regrets for them. And they will never get out of the Fire . [Surah: 2, Ayah: 167]

Then Allah تعالى clarified that they are all in the fire.

And others from the people of knowledge said: Their scholars are disbelievers and their laymen are evil doers (fusaaq).
